Adsl Connection In Win Xp

Featured Replies

I have just installed Windows XP on my desktop computer. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get a connection to the internet. On my laptop which is Linux I just plugged it in and away it went with Firefox. My connection is ADSL and I have a hub with 4 connections, Windows wants phone numbers and other stuff I do not have.

I tried to search the forum but it only led me to a single thread....

Surely someone can help!!

Try Control Panel => Internet Options => Connections and make sure "never dial a connection" is checked :o

Crossy did that but no difference.

Is there somewhere I can get step by step instructions on installing the internet for Win XP?

I have two Linux connections and they work perfectly, I didn't have to do anything they simply worked from startup what do I have to do to make bl**dy windows work??

Colin

control panel > network connection > create a new connection > connect to the internet > set up my connection manually > connect using a broadband modem ....

Hope this helps.

I get Network Connection, Dialup Connection or Virtual private network connection. I do not want a Dialup and I do not have a private network??

Petch01, I looked at both of these and tried a few things, I have set my ISP to 'TOT', maybe it wants something else?

sorry, yes I do have a network adaptor, I used to have a Linux system working on this computer and it was OK...

I am using TOT ADSL 500 baht a month system, the hub allows me to use the laptop (this computer) but I cannot gwt the Win XP to connect even though it is on the same hub!!

It worked there with the Linux connection,,,

To make this complete: connect to a broadband connection that is always on.

Did you try that?

Yes, I tried everything. I think I will just accept that Windows XP is crap and stick to my faithful laptop....

Niloc,

you're trying to setup or configure an internet connection on your WinXP machine. Why?

If you have successfully connected the Linux boxes to your internal network, you probably already know that it's just a matter of assigning an IP address to the network interface (either static or by dhcp). Same in WinXP!

If you want to configure a broadband connection straight in WinXP, it's always dial-up. Either a PPP connection over a modem, or a PPP connection over ethernet. And that requires a bridged setup between your adsl line and your PC (which you don't want as you share this connection with other computers).

Don't give up by blaming Windows that it's crap, but try to understand how TCP/IP works.......

Did nobody get it? Someone try to get members busy in posting impossibles!

May take a look at this topic from this same Member and you may realize what I'm talking about: HERE

And that same Member is programming small Windows Utility progs (on TV Download!) and didn't know something about Windows?!

Niloc: I very friendly and frankly ask you to stop that posting or I'll do it!

Cheers.
