Aloha All

Great forum, Ive learned a lot already. A buddy and I are coming out to Samui mid April. I have never been to Thailand before do it will be interesting and educational experience.

Some of the questions I have are cell phone rental and rates to Hawaii, Internet access and weather I should or should not bring my laptop (Im a computer geek and maintain a few business networks, I may be needed for tech support).

Also I am kind of looking for a Thai wife possibly as they are so beautiful and nice people, and I am available so any advise on that would help as well.

Aloha,

I moved from Maui in 2004!

You should be able to buy a sim card for your phone for about $11.00 & buy the minutes 300 is 150 minutes or less or more pending on your promotion you buy you need a dual band phone or a triband to have your cell work in Thailand. I am not sure how the internet situation is in Samui, I am sure it is pretty adequate. You can get way more in depth info on Samui on The Samui forum. You going to a full moon party in Koh Phangnon? You should like Thailand- A lot like Hawaii.

Lots of girls most want to get married for financial security. So don't be in a hurry! take your time. It took till I actually moved here & met a girl that was a hairdresser & we have been living together for about 4 years now. The bar girls can take care of quick needs but if you are thinking of moving here Try a girl with a regular job opposed to the bar girl scene. the girls are quite skilled at saying what you want to hear to seek advantage out of the bars. Hey have a good time!!!!

Howzit Bro,

I'm a former big islander.....A Punatic and have been living up north [Chiang Mai] for 8 yrs now and never want to go back to the big isle. Hawaii was a great place 15 yrs ago, but not the same any more...too many haoles [i'm haole my self, but don't like how they changed the island].

Samui will remind you of maui or kauai but smaller and wall to wall tourists, but will give you that island feel. You will have to travel further off the beaten track to get the feel of the real Thailand and it's wonderful people that have the old style aloha spirit.

internet access everywhere...especially on Samui. your cel phone will not be compatable with the system here, but it's cheap enough to buy a local phone and new sim card for $35 and get prepaid loads. and since you have a laptop, you can call home cheaply via 'skype'...2.1 cents/min.

Wives are easy to find here, but go slow and don't get married to the easiest one. a good one is hard to find and samui is probably not the best place to look....you'll have better luck by looking in the country if you want a keeper.

Anyway,

Aloha to you and welcome to the real paradise, you'll love it.

Pm me if you want any detailed or specific info and i'll see what i can do for a bro from Hawaii.

Aloha,

I am a fellow kamaaina and have a home in Kona. I have a Thai wife and have spent a lot of time in Thailand over the past 15 years. I can probably answer any questions you may have about costs, girls, etc. in LOS. You can send me a pm (personal message) on the forum if you need answers to any specific questions or if you are in Kona and want to meet in town for a chat, I would be happy to tell you all about the many great and some not so great things you can expect to find in LOS. I will be in Kona until March 5 and will then be leaving for Thailand.

I have 2 nokia's 1 works in Thailand & America 1 only works in America (Both got from T-Mobile) the dual band works fine & the single band is only good in the U.S. Check with your service provider if your phone is only a single band. If it is a dual it should work fine.

What? No local Tidas interested in you? If you are not careful the cute little Thai girls will have you for lunch and move on to the next guy without missing a beat, bro. I would think a meet up with jetjock would be a very good idea.

Wow, Thanks for the replys, you guys are awesome. This is a very active board.

Good advise on the girls, luckly Im not in a hurry as Ive recently out of a 10 year relationship, spilt up went well though, still friends.

Phone - Currently Verizon CDMA, I like the idea of buying the phone there, easy enough.

Jetjock, I get to Kona about once a week and would like to meet up with you somewhere. I will PM you.

Now to try and lean a little of the language.

Once again, Thanks Guys

Hi Cruzinit,

If you either take your phone into verizon or take your battery out of the phone & copy the numbers down, & call them verizon will be able to tell you if it is compatible with Thailand. It sounds like your phone is a dual or triband anyway. I think U.S. is 900 band & Thailand is 1800. Most of the phones you get with a contract now are compatible. Unless it is a prepaid throwaway!

Good luck on the language 11 years in Hawaii learned most of the pigeon. 4 years in Thailand Nit naui. Very little !

Nice Jetlock Still got the aloha- Never leaves!!!! Still got my give aloha rubber armband from 5 years ago with the Rastifarley

Jamaica colors.

CDMA only works in Bangkok.

I am from NZ and have CDMA.

CDMA network was supposed to be extended, but it is being shut in Aust and NZ and some other countries.

Hey, mobiles are cheap, if ya phones do not work, buy another.

Howzit! I'm from Oahu. PM me if you want to discuss anything in particular. Jus' be careful with hooking up with any girls too quickly. Lots of girls are just after your money and as previously discussed, the good ones take awhile to find. Best girls tend to be strong buddhists and work day jobs. Most bar girls are good for entertainment only!

As for studying thai language, a simple phrasebook will do for now. Takes a lot of time to learn and most guys do with "Sawatdee khap, Khapkhun khap" (and where's the bathroom?)(Hong naam yuu tinai?)

Best of luck! Aloha!
