February 29, 200818 yr what's the Thai word for lilac? also, there's a type of plum, I'd like to know the Thai word for: description: about 6 cm long and 2 cm wide. It's shiny dark yellow (not dull light yellow, as are similar fruits), with one elongated seed, about the size of a date seed. I'm not a big fan of most Thai fruits, but this yellow plum-like fruit was excellent - though not common in markets. thanks in advance.
February 29, 200818 yr Do they have lilacs in Thailand? Lilac is Syringa in Latin Here is a Univ of Melbourne website with lots of plant names in Thai, you'll need to know the Latin name obviously, but worth a look. www.plantnames.unimelb.edu.au/Sorting/List_bot.html
February 29, 200818 yr what's the Thai word for lilac? I don't think there's a Thai word for lilac. It's usually just called ดอกไลแล็ค ("dok lilac" = lilac flower). also, there's a type of plum, I'd like to know the Thai word for:description: about 6 cm long and 2 cm wide. March 1, 200818 yr Author The yellow marian fruit in the photo is somewhat familiar, though it's not the precise fruit I'm seraching for. Much appreciated though! Instead, the fruit I seek is darker yellow and the skin is smooth (almost like plastic) rather than slightly fuzzy like the fruit pictured. Well, it's a consolation that I have a baby tree of the fruit I'm cruising for, so at least when it yields, I'll get some in my garden.
March 1, 200818 yr I thought of maprang at first but the "not dull light yellow" part threw me off. I think it's มะยงชิด (mayong chid). Very similar to maprang, but slightly larger, rounder, a darker yellow, and has smoother skin. It's also more expensive and the tree supposedly takes quite a while to grow. Scientific name: Bouea macrophylla Griff Some links (in Thai): นครนายก เปิดสวน ชวนเที่ยวและชิม “มะยงชิด มะปรางหวาน” นครนายกจัดงาน มะยงชิด มะปรางหวาน ลักษณะทางพฤษศาสตร์ของมะปรางและมะยงชิด - Details of the fruit, maprang vs. mayong chid, and growing the fruit (warning: very annoying website design) โจ - หลังสวน - มะยงชิด - Details on growing as well (but much easier on the eyes)

I came accross this word and remembered your post. เสี่ยน (si-an) - Persian Lilac.I'm not sure if it's the common lilac we're used to seeing in Europe. I hope this is of some help.
April 14, 200818 yr I believe เสี้ยน is quite a different plant, genus Cleome. Here you may see a picture of เสี้ยน : http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinnenblume Erwin
