dominique355
As far a body styling is concerned, I would say the Italians are the uncontested masters. And not just with one single show car, but with consistent contributions to the car world, year after year. Names like Pininfarina, Giorgio Giugiaro, Touring, Bertone, Ghia etc. have produces year after year the most beautiful cars (for my eyes). The most ugly cars, again for my eyes, come from Korea. Have you ever seen a SsongYang? My favorite designs of all times: - Lamborghini Miura (Bertone) - Alfa Romeo Canguro (Giorgio Giugiaro) - Ferrari 250 GTB Lusso - Ferrari GTO II

PeaceBlondie
The Shelby Cobra was an AC Ace, which Tojerio (sp) clearly ripped off a copy of the Ferrari 166M Barchetta. Which was designed by an Italian, of course. The French built more than their share of butt ugly cars in the 19950-1970 era (4CV, 2CV) Citroen DS, etc.) I think their beautiful Renault Dauphine Caravelle/Floride was designed by an Italian. Americans have not built many beautiful cars recently, but my 2000 Chevrolet Z24 coupe was gorgeous, as were my Corvair convertibles (1964 Spyder, 1966 Corsa), with no help from foreigners. The Yugo was water cooled, I believe, but a piece of junk which, like many Ladas in Russia, started out as an ugly Fiat boxy sedan. Most of the great designers have made most of their money off of sedans which get little publicity. There is only so much you can do on a sedan/saloon. PeaceBlondie
Yeah, at the time, I thought it was. So did lots of experts. Not as ugly maybe as the Traction Avant that it replaced. The Chapron convertible made a nice parade car for French presidents.
micksterbs
I thought it was just one of the most original, jaw-dropping designs ever. Loved it when it came out and I still think it's special now. But no-one's mentioned the E-Type yet; surely a candidate for auto-pornstar of the 20th century.

wilko
among the best designers, Andre Citroen, Ledwinka, Raymond Loewy, the worst Harley Earl, Hudson Ford Nation-wise Italy and France the worst UK and USA
PeaceBlondie
What did Andre Citroen design, the Traction Avant? The DS19? Yes, Harley Earl (chief of design for domestic General Motors cars, early 1950's) made some big mistakes, but his Motorama dream cars (Corvette, Eldorado. Espada, Nomad wagon, Buick Skylark, etc) were show stoppers and trend setters. He probably invented the pillarless 'hardtop convertible.' I did laugh at the 2002 ads for Buick, wanting to bring back the ghost of Harley Earl; no thanks. But the 1960's saw some really great GM big cars in production under Mitchell, including both Corvair series, the Stingray Corvette, Buick Riviera, etc. I think Lyons at Jaguar designed the XK120 series and the E type, among others. Count Albrecht Goertz was German or Austrian. Didn't Colin Chapman help draw some great Lotus designs? In addition to Raymond Loewy, Brooks Stevens in the US had some good designs, and Howard Darrin was American. Of course, maybe some of us are influenced by our early days. I wanted a turquoise and white 1954 or 1956 Oldsmobile 98 convertible. Or, a lemon Lincoln Premiere convertible before it got the Futura tail fins, or a 1956 Continental. wilko
Le Corbusier designed a "peoples car in the early 1920s, it's worth checking out...you'll see where Citroen (2CV) and Ledwinka (Tatra/VW Beetle) both got their ideas from...Porche eventually stole the Ledwinka design. Loewy, Citroen and Le Corbusier were "mates"". the problem I have with most US "designs" is that they aren't really designs...they're styling. It's revealing to look down the history of mechanical inventions connected with the motor vehicle....from memory the only 2 significant American contributions were the automatic gearbox and winking indicators. Most of the mechanicals are also 19th century in origin which means most of us are rolling around on a concept that is 2 centuries old! and some vehicles make you acutely aware of that too! wilko
DS - ugly??? “It is obvious that the new Citroën has fallen from the sky in as much as it appears at first sight as a superlative object,”...“The DS – the goddess – has all the features of one of those objects from another universe which have supplied fuel for the neomania of the eighteenth century and that of our own science fiction.” Roland Barthes - Mythologies
micksterbs
And I still have a soft spot for the original Lotus Elite. Very pretty in the flesh, delicate-looking. Actually, that's hardly surprising as Chapman was the master of "marginal engineering". After all, LOTUS stands for: Lots Of Trouble, Usually Serious. dave_boo
Can't believe I had to wait for post 36 (Countach) and 40 (E-Type) to mention two classic designs that still are very 'sexy'. The classic hatchback Mustang, along with the split-window 'Vette are two other notable designs. I'm going to have to disagree with the Delorean consensus here. I always assumed that it was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, but apparently I was mistaken. However, it shares similar lines to both the Isuzu Impulse and the Volkswagen Scirocco. I'm not going to hazard a 'worst' car design, simply because I can see a bit of beauty in all cars. But if you were to twist my arm, it would have to be all those staid designs from the '70s. solent01
One of the coolest Hypercars out right now is the Bugatti Veyron. From the same guys that make the VW Bug, With a top speed of 253 mph/407.8 kph it's awesome but if you had the 850000 GBP/1.7million USD to afford it, you would never want to drive it. It would end up being something you show your friends to impress them. One of the worst production cars ever released IMHO is the Yugo. I searched on all the major used car sites in the US and couldn't find one for sale. One of my buddies had one when they were new and it struggled to get over 50 mph and when he drove it more than about an hour it shut off to keep from overheating since it didn't have a liquid cooled engine it was air cooled like a motorcycle. From the G to the D No, with my money I brought a Learjet, and the best car for the roads I drive on in the UK (IMHO) a Lamberghini Gallardo And yes it's "a loud, get out of my bloody way, I'm coming through, Matallic Orange". Before that I made do with a little old Stallion My 480 has already gone though (went towards the Lear) In Thailand I make do with a Vigo 3.0ltr 4x4 (for work) and a Beemer M5 (apart from my two wheel transport), my wife drives a Fortuner. Worst I agree is the Yugo, and early Scoda's, or any BL Austin. Edited April 24, 2008 by solent01
stingray
I think the most beautyful desings and quality was made the american cars in the fifties, like a 56 or 59' Cadillac "Eldo", early 70'ties the Chevy Corvette, Dodge Challanger, Pontiac Firebird Trans Am (specialy in black, like Burt Reinolds drove one in the movie Smokie and the Bandit). another interesting but forgotten car was the little Fiat 850 convertible, i'm not sure it called Spyder? All the old cars had some designs and style. But today almost every car looks the same, "like a plastic egg"
Jingjok
...and the best car for the roads I drive on in the UK (IMHO) a Lamborghini Gallardo I applaud your subtle choice of colour: is that Arancio Borealis? I drove down to the Sant'Agata factory from UK last summer, and was shown round the Gallardo production line - what a fantastic place. It was one of those wonderful days which lives on in the memory. That's me with Cristina Guizzardi, the delightful young lady who runs the Lamborghini museum. Do you want to bring your Gallardo to Singapore for a rally next April: Singapore-Malaysia-Phuket? It will be great fun. I've just signed up myself, and am only the second punter to do so, so am looking to encourage others who have a link with Thailand. The organiser is arranging bulk shipping of the cars from UK. I'll be driving my old Countach which I recently imported into Malaysia. http://www.cannonball8000.com/sea/ Oh, and to stay on-topic, I'll go with Clarkson about the worst car: The Perodua Kelisa. Since I live in Malaysia some of the time, I see these delights daily: I can't help thinking of Clarkson's comments every time, which always makes me smile. That's the new UK model which is not so bad. AND at only five grand (GBP) a pop one can't really complain. Thaiboxer
Some of those old cars (example: post #50) are pretty good-looking even today. Those older cars from the mid 60's through the 70's were REAL cars. They were made of tough metal and had REAL engines...usually inline-6's or V-8's. I believe the 1965-66 Chrysler Imperial is even banned from the Demolition Derby events in the States due to its carshworthiness!
