Hd Partition

Featured Replies

I have a huge HD in drive C: I used to have them halved into 2 drives, C and D. I used drive D to install all my data.

Now I bought a new laptop and it comes with only 1 drive. I want to seperate the data drive and program drive as I used to. I'm not sure if I can do it now since I have everything on the drive C. Do I have to reformat drive C and partition it into two? Any advice would be appreciated.

It's actually very easy if you're using Microsoft Vista (or Linux :o ) On Vista, disable your swap file, chkdsk, defrag a couple of times so that you can make as much space as your heart desires. Than, right click "Computer" on your desktop, manage it and click on your C:\ drive. You can than shrink your partition, and format the than available area to NTFS.

But I'm using XP Prof.

Acronis DiskDirector or PowerQuest Partition Magic doing that job. You can also download Super Fdisk 1.0 from Thaivisa Download which is a Freeware can do that Job as well.

Cheers.

Do I need to reformat first?

Thanks

No you shouldn't have to, these Partition tools allow you to manage (or create) the partition on 'the fly' meaning you just take space from the C: Drive and use that free space to create a D: Drive.

I've used partition magic in the past and its an excellent utility - i haven't tried the others that have been suggested so i couldn't comment on those.

Thanks guys.

Don't need to reformat the existing Partition which you resize but the new one, you'll create as the 2. Partition in the empty space you get while resizing, you'll need to format. But don't worry, that partition didn't has any data on it because it's a new one.

Cheers.

Reimar, thanks for the dowload you put up.

However, it' s (the Fuper FDisk) only a demo version. It won't let you do the real thing!

For a free alternative you could try Visopsys Partition Logic, which boots from a CD or floppy disk and runs as a standalone system.

http://partitionlogic.org.uk/

From the 'About' page; Can resize NTFS (Windows XP) and Linux swap.

Of course in an ideal situation, you'd backup your hard disk drive just in case of problems.

Let us know how you get on.

Regards,

Tom.

Thanks TB.

However, I downloaded teh Parted Magic Live CD from a site below. It's like what you said above, boots from a CD but I never get it to work. I burned it onto CD using Roxio, but it never boots itself although I made it a bootable CD.

Make sure you have the CD Drive as the first entry in the boot sequence (in the bios)

Ah! I always set my BIOS as the CD drive the first so completely forgot to check this. Since this is a new laptop so the default from the factory is drive C.

Thanks wolfire.

Only disappointed that it won't allow me to create more than 2 drives.
