Crowded and total chaos.

Personally I used to stay in doors for a couple of days.

Agreed, best stay out of the way.

Regards to No.1 bar......... :o

Don't listen to the miserable old farts on here, Songkran is the best day of the year! get out have a few cold ones and have a laugh with the water or just watch others have a laugh. I would not say the island is any busier but everyone is out on the streets (except the people on this board) so it seems busier.

For sure the usual rubbish will pop up on here from the PC brigade about motorbike accidents etc but you just got to make sure it doesn't happen to you.

My wife and me we used to go around Samui by motorbike - real hardcore! But now we are all old farts and just drive with a open jeep, a full load of kids and a big watertank around Nathon area - Songkran is Sanook!

What exactly is "pc" about thinking songkran aint so great?? :o Look if you are into it, it is GREAT and I was too (the first 3 or 4 times) but if you are not into it...it sucks, particularly if you are farang. And you will note, most quality long-term foreign residents here who have the means, get the <deleted> out of here that week...as will I.

Terrible post jocwaoh, no reason to get personal, you don't like Songkran and theoracle does. So what.

Seems to me, you enjoyed Songkran the first time around, I think the poster would be in the same boat and might have a good time too, no? Your opinion aside lets let the poster know that he'll be drenched, all in good fun, and not to get upset about it because this happens every year. It's a big waterfight, buy a water gun, stay on foot, put your camera and money in a zip lock bag, and have a few beers.

It's LOS not LOG (Land of Grumps). Have fun.

It`s ok for an hour or two, until the drunken yobs start fighting as usually happens.

Then you get the morons who refuse to stop throwing water even when it has finished. Soaking you and your wife after you have gone home to change and are going out for a meal.

Clearly you can't tell when "it has finished." :o

Here's the dope on Lamai: Two years ago it was quite lively along the beach road; Bauhaus even had their foam machine from the dance parties turned on into the street. Last year was not nearly as active -- sure, it was the same event, but it seems that after a few hours people were mostly just walking around and going through the motions. There were fewer people on the streets last year as well.

Here is my intro to Songkran story:

Short trip to the beach road in Lamai on my scooter...make the turn onto the road and the first "water-bearer" I come to is a Thai man with a bucket normally used for (get totally faced) drinking...he moves out into the street to meet me and hauls back and whams me with a full load of ice water straight into my balls at point blank range...welcome to the new incarnation of the tender Buddhist tradition Samui style.

Enough with the flaming, I've had to delete and edit abusive posts, so lets behave in a civil manner.

Songkram as it was, was fine, with a dab of water or talc on your forehead. But now it has hooligan status. It has nothing to do with being 'old farts', when you don't wish to be hooliganized. People either want to get drenched or they don't. As with the smoking arguments. I would suggest, that the local government make the sport stadium the hooligan area, for the songkram period ( will it be 4 days this year or a week?) Then you can all meet up there and beat the s##t out of each other, and leave the rest of us in peace.

It is one day dominator, one day! Not 4 days or a week like it is in other areas of Thailand, sometimes they start the evening before the main day on Samui but thats easy to avoid if you want to and its only water pistol types.

theoracle, I've lived in Samui for 4 years, and certainly songkram has lasted longer than 1 day, and in Lamai, Cheweng etc, it's more than water pistols.....but never the less I hope you enjoy, but please remember, not everyone does.

On the main day it is more than water pistols of course, I was saying the few people that start the day before (a few girly bars and massage shops) only use waterpistols and its not full on like the main day. I too have been here several years and have never seen anyone throwing water the day after the event.

theorcle,

not sure where you live on Samui, but definately the day before people are throwing water, merely the tourist who don't care what you're wearing or ignore your signs that you don't want water on you.
