Unusual Bamboo Varieties

Featured Replies

Does anyone know of a source of exotic varieties of bamboo, that can ship within Thailand?

After much research, the only possibility that I have been given is to check out the Chatuchak market. That is fine, but unfortunately I live in Issan.

Specifically, I am looking for Bambusa Lako, (Timor Black Bamboo), if that is familiar to anyone.

Thank you very much,

I am a plant freak! I'm allways looking for rare and unusual plants and palms. I have been to dozens of nurseries and have never seen that bamboo potted up. Only growing on their site. No one takes care of their big ones, they are full of scale and black sooty mold. anyway, contact a few landscape compnies. I believe there is Thailand yellow pages online with many listed.

maybe you can buy a few stumps with roots.

keep growing,

Have you seen this ? (from Germany of all places....)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Bambusa-lako-Timor-b...1QQcmdZViewItem

There were more auctions for seeds on eBay and all sold, quite reasonable actually.

Thank you for your replies!

**meandwi: Actually, I have a hard copy of the Thai Yellow Pages, and haven't had much luck that way. However, since the YPs are regional, you may be onto something there re the online version. I will give it a try!

**LaoPo: I followed your link to Ebay and sure enuf. I've never bought from Ebay before, so would need to go thru all the registration stuff and give them all my personal info. My past experiences with "registrations" have come back to bite me, so I'm a bit reluctant. However, at least that gives me encouragement to know that there is a source somewhere. If I end up with no luck locally, then I will go for it!

Re Ebay and seeds: I've never heard of anyone growing bamboo from seeds. Before I embark onto that trajectory, can anyone out there please confirm for me that they have had success with growing bamboo from seeds?

Thank you very much,

Regarding Ebay and bamboo seeds, I just stumbled upon this post:

I offer it without comment, because I'm still learning myself; but it does add a touch of scepticism to the mix...

Zapatero,

Bambusa lako, the black-stem bamboo which originates from Timor and widely distributed in cultivation in Malaysia and Thailand, is available for sale at plant nurseries in Chiang Mai, in small size (about 1 m tall, 400 Baht), medium size (about 2.5 m tall, over 1,000 Baht) and large size (over 4 m tall, several thousand Baht). I have seen these plants in person in 2008 and 2009, I grow one plant in my garden, and I can therefore confirm that these plants are true Bambusa lako.

I obtained seeds labeled as "Bambusa lako" from an internet source. It turned out to be a bamboo but definitely not Bambusa lako. So be careful if buying seeds from sources like Ebay.
