One of those little 14 HP Kubota single cylinder tractors would have PLENTY of power to pull even a four row corn planter.

Are you sure Gary - you are not talking about the average 4 row planter you see dragged around Thai corn fields behind a Ford tractor, are you - you are talking about something else.

The hp required to work the average 4 row planter you see being dragged behind Ford tractors throughout Thailand is about 16hp per row @ 3mph (to drag the row opener v-shaped blade through the soil) and they weigh not much less than the average 14hp Kubota - it would be the tractor front wheels that would lift off the ground when it came time to turn the tractor around at the end of the field. So befre I say you is wrong, its probably best I ask just which type of planter are you talking about - I know you can get very light 4 row tinny units with about 30cm/40cm spacing between the rows which are okay if you are planting a couple rai.

SAP - 175 rai with a 2 row planter - that real ambitious! - or is their some reason why you need to use a 2 row planter? How much time have you allocated to complete planting?

With the kind of planter you are talking about it must be a no till planter. I actually was looking for a small three point hitch planter. The only ones I saw in this area were two and four row planters made for the iron buffalo. The seed plates are rotated by small steel wheels with lugs welded on them. Some of them also had a fertilizer box behind the seed box. I didn't see any western style planters.

A 2 row corn planter with driver setting on the seat was pulled by a single horse for farm purposes, the 4 row was a double team hitch, driver still on seat, but had 2 hoopers instead of the one on a two row planter. My great uncle farmed 160 acres with horses and mules up into the mid 50's. We used a 2 row for garden and he used 4 row on farm. Nothing but a chisel with a small disk behind to cover grain. What Gary is describing is about like the wheels turning a shaft with gear that meashed with a gear which drove seed plate. I pulled the 2 row with a 16 hp ford for garden planting and it worked fine. Do not know what they have cobbled together in Thailand.

Okay - understand what you mean, thats why I was a little hesistant to say impossible. The 4 row planters used in Thailand would be impossible to drag round with a Kubota 14hp - still, I think 175rai with a 2 row planter would take you between 6 - 10days!.

With a Ford and a 4row planter - a day or 2 at most.

SAP, i would think your post and the dates required for a kubuta [near 1 month ] suggests that when the plot would be available for seeding?

Sorry Guys have been busy started harvesting corn

I will be usina a two row John Deere planter so will weigh a little. When I have time I will make up a four row unit. I plan to plant about 25 rai per day with it.

ON the subject of planters if anyone wants a John Deere four row or two row planter, send me a PM and I can help you.

I have changed my plan a little, and atcullay need the older style kubota with adjustable wheels, the wheels neeed to be able to adjust to either 1.15 meters or 1.72 meters.
