The timing of the train from Pattaya to Bangkok is decent, it leaves Pattaya mid-afternoon. Coming from Bangkok though, one needs to leave just before 07:00. Can't beat the price though, approximately 30 baht.

Bus twice the price, but more comfortable and leaves at civilised hours, both ways..

I was told that the train takes 5 hours.

If travelling to Pattaya surely there is something better to do there for the extra three hours if you use a coach/taxi for the two hour trip.
