Is your ISP in Australia or are you trying to connect through another provider?

Do you have a cable or wireless connection through your ISP?

It's a cable broadband. The ISP is in Melbourne, Australia.

I haven't a clue what to do.

Your best bet is to do what Nignoy suggests, phone the ISP and have them connect you....or inform you of any problems in your area.

Problems could be that the cable is down, usually because of an emergency break in the connection.

Before you do that:

If you click on your "start" button, you will see an icon.."Connect To"

Let you mouse pointer hover over this and click on "Show all connections."

You should now get a page that shows various connections. Choose the "Local Area Connection," and right-click that.

A box will open..click on "repair"

The next message should tell you that you are connected (if all is well at your end)

Close all those boxes and then try to connect again.

If you are still having trouble, phone your ISP and let them help you.

There is nothing wrong with the Local Area Connection but I can't connect to the internet.

no, I can't see it.

It's probably something simple like 'setup wizard'

Obviously I can't just plug in the broadband and expect it to work, but I don't know what to do :o

I can use the PC ok but not my laptop.

You will find it in your Control Panel

If the PC can connect then your laptop needs to be set up to the specifications of your ISP. This can be done over the telephone.

You sound like me, I can just about turn my laptop on :o locate your phone, press those little black things until you start to hear voices!! in a clear Understandable voice explain your problem and the voice wil explain what to do or if you are a complete Nulpe they offer to access your computer and do it all for you, At all times be polite and speak very slowly because the helpers cannot listen very Fast!!Nignoy
