File photo for reference only Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin has reassured the public that no new anthrax cases have been detected in Mukdahan province. However, he has emphasised the need for continued vigilance in high-risk regions. Residents are urged to refrain from handling, slaughtering, or transporting animal carcasses and are advised against consuming raw meat. As of now, the total number of anthrax cases remains at four. This includes one fatal case, two individuals currently receiving treatment, and one person who has been discharged. Surveillance of 636 individuals who came into contact with the infected has concluded without uncovering additional cases. Nevertheless, Minister Somsak underlined the necessity for ongoing caution in susceptible areas. Anthrax is a serious zoonotic disease caused by resilient spore-forming bacteria that can survive in the environment for over a decade. It predominantly affects herbivores such as cattle, buffalo, goats, and sheep. Infected animals often die rapidly and can transmit the bacteria to humans through contact with their blood, meat, or organs. Severe human infections can result in a mortality rate as high as 80%. Residents in high-risk zones are instructed to avoid engaging in activities like handling or butchering sick or dead animals without appropriate protective equipment. Additionally, they should avoid inhaling dust that could contain anthrax spores and refrain from consuming raw meat from potentially infected animals. Somsak stressed the importance of promptly reporting any unusual animal deaths to livestock officials to help prevent further spread.
