I've been working here in LOS since 1991 (at a public university) and I now want to switch to a retirement "visa"/extension. This very recent decision was taken due to dissatisfaction at my place of work so I have a 3-month time frame (contract requires 3 months' adv. notice; June 30 is my deadline) to get everything done. Within these 3 months what would I need to do, prepare, get psyched up for, whatever? And more basically, is this enough time?

My current visa, since 1991, is Non-Imm B and I plan to go the Bht800,000 route- my pension-type income won't kick in for another 2-3 years. And I'm not married. I gather the money is supposed to be in the bank 3 months prior to renewal, but for the first time what is required? And since I've been here all along does this affect it in any way?

I've searched some of the threads that are close to my situation, but most are 2 years or so old. I have friends who have switched, but again, several years ago, so I'm afraid their experience may not be quite so relevant to 2008.

I'd be much obliged for any advice or anecdotes that might help me make the switch smoothly.

I believe it would be best to talk with your local immigration office as normally there is an expectation that if money in bank is being used that it can be sourced outside Thailand. It should not be the case for someone in your position but it would be best to have there advise. It must be in bank 3 months the first time. But a single entry non immigrant visa can be issued to allow 90 days extra time by immigration at an extra 2,000 baht.

Hopefully someone in your position has done it in the last year and can provide recent experience. It may be good to advise your location.

Thanks, lopburi. I'm in BKK so Suan Plu is my place. The 800,000 will be from my account in the States, and I can get it remitted at any time. I just handed in my resignation a few days ago and haven't had time to drop by the Imm. office, and then Songkran is coming up, so the timing is a bit of a mess. It was much easier for those of my friends who did this a few years back. Sigh!
