70 Pound Trans Pacific Check Bags Is Dead!

Featured Replies

Fie on them, and the collective horses they road in on!  EVA and China Airlines is swtiching over to the 50# limit for travel to the U.S., as did the U.S. airlines last year.

There's a short window, tho, you can still use the 70# rule if your ticket is bought NLT 14 April 2008.  Happily I bought mine last month.

Below EVA's statement, China Air the same, I've not check ANA, JAL, etc but expect the same.

The baggage allowance depends on airport and destination. Two allowance systems are in use:

Piece System:

For travel to and from the US and Canada and certain countries in South and Central America, the baggage allowance is per piece:

Super Business Class / Business Class / Premium Laurel Class: Maximum of two pieces of baggage. The sum of the three dimensions of each piece may not exceed 158 cm (62 in.) and the weight of each piece may not exceed 32kg (70 lb.) Underthe piece system, a passenger traveling in Super Business Class or Business Class or Premium Laurel Class is entitled to carriage of one extra piece without charge while traveling on EVA-operated sectors. However, if you are connecting to/from another carrier, EVA cannot guarantee this privilege applies. Note: The free allowance remains the same as above for passengers holding tickets issued before 2008.04.15. For passengers travelling and holding tickets issued after 2008.04.15, the weight of this extra piece will be limited to 23kg/50lb.

Evergreen Deluxe / Elite/ Economy Class: Maximum of two pieces of baggage. The total baggage size, measured separately and added together, cannot exceed 273 cm (107 in.) The sum of the three dimensions of each individual piece cannot exceed 158 cm (62 in.) and the weight of each piece cannot exceed 32 kg (70 lb.). Note: The free allowance remains the same as above for passengers holding tickets issued before 2008.04.15. For passengers travelling and holding tickets issued after 2008.04.15, the free allowance on Evergreen Deluxe Class and Elite Class will be 28kg/61lb. per piece and on Economy Class will be 23kg/50lb. per piece.

Each infant is entitled to one piece with the sum of the three dimensions not to exceed 115cm (45in.)

Weight system:

For regions/countries other than territories in the US/Canada and certain countries in South/Central America, a weight limit applies:

Super Business Class/ Business Class/ Premium Laurel Class: 30 kg/66 lb.

Evergreen Deluxe Class/ Elite Class: 20 kg/44 lb. or 25 kg/55 lb. on an EVA-operated flight.

Economy Class: 20 kg/44 lb.

Each infant is entitled to 10 kg/22 lb

The way I read it, EVA business class is entitled to 2x check-ed bags of 70lbs each and one (carry-on) of up to 50lbs. That's a total of 190 lbs. Seems to me that should be much more than enough for the average business or holiday traveler. Economy class will get between 100-120 lbs. divided among up to 2 pieces. Seems generous enough to me.

Qantas handlers threaten baggage ban

QANTAS baggage handlers may implement a union ban on baggage weighing more than 20kg as of today.

Thousands of airline passengers could have their trips disrupted if Qantas does not reduce its per bag limit from 32kg to 20kg.

The current 40kg cap for first class international passengers would be halved.

Baggage handlers voted yesterday to adopt the bans for all flights if the airline did not change its baggage policy.

Handlers said an estimated 80 per cent of checked baggage weighed more than 20kg.

The union said that almost a third of handlers had been hurt in the past year, and one in seven had to take time off work because of injury.
