Seconded, Bangkok's great at Songkran, I can actually enjoy driving again!

yes, bangkok is great. such a blue sky, you can see for miles, cleanest air of the year and so quiet, almost no cars on the roads.

Isn't there a road that's especially quiet at this time of year? Khao San something-or-other. Give that a try :o

Seriously, I found that even up country the single carriageway roads get blocked by hoards of youths demanding that you stop and let them splash and paste you. The only way through that I found was headlights full on, horn on and head for a gap between them. It takes a lot to deter the little b*ggers.

Yes, Bangkok. You can actually walk across Sukhumvit without threat of death, even between Asoke and Soi 4. When I lived in Pattaya, I stayed in my 15th floor condo with a bottle of single malt, dark rum, and many, many beers. Could even see the turmoil from my balcanoy. Great.

Two years ago, I spent a couple days at a remote resort on the east coast of Phi Phi Don, and then a couple more days at a nice resort on the NW coast of Koh Lanta. Neither were expensive (400-500 baht a night), and the food/drink was excellent.

At both locations, it was impossible to tell that it was the Songkran holiday. Quiet, peaceful, dry...

If you want a real nice quiet time I can recommend Dung Quat. Be it Songkran, Christmass, New Year (even Chinese), Easter, Loy Kratong, Tet and any day with a 'y' in it you can be sure it's quiet in DQ.

Suvarnabhumi Airport.

And from there any plane out of the country.

cheers

onzestan

:D

My thoughts too ... Surely the worlds most idiotic holiday. Or is it the Spanish with their tomatoes :o

but at least that only lasts an hour or so.

Naka.

Isn't there anywhere a calendar available which shows the official songkran date for areas in thailand?Would be handy for sure.

Try India. They throw paint, instead of water.

Pattaya during the 'official' Songkran, then a middle of the night flit to Lomsak as soon as Patty takes off - or any hotel room when Patti takes off.

i am hoping lopburi old town won't be too crazy for too many days

i need to leave Bangkok as i am in the 'war zone'

heads up again:

one year i went to kanchanaburi and it was very mellow and just on Sunday i believe

but i suppose that depends on the calender for any given year

maybe someone can verify that for the thread

any experiences in lopburi
