April 14, 200818 yr Sorry if this is a silly question, but I'm not used to using Windows Vista. The Notebook I'm using is borrowed indefinitely from my sil. It only has a local disk drive C with 142.8GB; a HP Recovery Drive D with 6.25GB and a CD drive E. The D drive tells me every 2 minutes it's full. I've tried to compress the recovery files but it didn't work. Can someone with Vista know how please advise how to either transfer some of the files to c drive or just turn off the notifications. It also tries to do a backup every hour or so but as there is not enough space on the drive, lets me know it's failed doing the backup every hour also! Also how much is a good price for external hard drives? I saw at Mbk that 160 GB was over 5000 baht. Is that normal price? Thanks
April 14, 200818 yr If you have some free space on the main partition, you could try resizing your backup partition to allow for backups to be made. Vista has a built in partition manager (its not great) but worth a shot, there are other better partition resizers if you need one.
April 15, 200818 yr ....as well as the above, clean the D: drive with HDD properties, Disk Clean Up, normal stuff here then -> More Options -> System Restore - Clean Up. That should get some more space to play with. BTW I dislike Vista for all these reasons and more.
April 15, 200818 yr The D drive is the Recovery Partition which is hosting the original Software which was coming with the Laptop. To suggest to compress, delete or any other action is an stupid Idea because that just means to destroy the original Software because to be able to use them they must rely in it's original size pp.! I would keep the original D Drive/Partition! If you need more space, use an external USB Drive and copy all files you don't need on the computer at all times to that drive. If you need them, just connect the USB Drive to the Laptop. The cost of an 250 MB 2.5" Hdd is about THB 3,500 + THB 3-400 forn USB case. Cheers.
April 16, 200818 yr Have you checked where the data is being saved to? Is it possible that the default setting is to save the data to drive D instead of C like its supposed to?
April 16, 200818 yr Hi 2.5" 320GB in Singapore is now 275S$ (i know we are not in Singers but thats the price there right now)
April 17, 200818 yr Author Thanks for the added suggestions. Cuban, I did the disk clean up and it didn't create any extra space, there's nothing in the recycle bin and no extra backups so not sure why it didn't work. Reimar, I only tried to compress the restore files because that's what my computer (vista) suggested I do to free some space but after following its auto instructions it failed to work anyway. Sbk, files save to C drive; the only thing on D drive are the recovery files. Thanks for your replies, appreciate it.
April 21, 200818 yr I wonder if this link might help at all ? the configuration of the back up process of the D drive might be proprietary, if there any help documentation for the computer in question ? - or is it a vanilla install.
April 21, 200818 yr I would re-read Reimar and SBK's posts - the D drive is setup as a recovery partition. You should NOT be saving data to this partition. Can you actually access this partition from windows explorer?
April 23, 200818 yr If it was me i would do a full back up on a external hard drive as Vista has an excellent back up whole drive facility then delete everything on the d drive and use that as data...
