2nd phase expansion of Suvarnabhumi airport starts soon

BANGKOK: -- Amid sharp increases in the number of passengers and airlines using the Thai capital's Suvarnabhumi airport, concerned authorities are now ready to implement the second phase of construction to enlarge the airport, a senior Airports of Thailand (AoT) official said Wednesday.

Somchai Sawasdipol, chairman of a working committee responsible for solving noise pollution at Suvarnabhumi airport, located in Bangkok's neighbouring province of Samut Prakan, said more than 42 million passengers used facilities at the airport in 2007 while its full capacity is at 45 million.

There is a need to expand the airport to cater to the rising demands of passengers and airlines, said Mr. Somchai. AoT will speed solving noise pollution at the airport and prepare for the phase 2 construction.

Designs for the taxiway for phase 2 are now prepared while a referendum on noise pollution from people living near the airport will be held before the construction begins, he said.

The AoT committee is expected to discuss on the noise pollution issue during its next meeting, Mr. Somchai said.

He said that there is an aviation law in Thailand which forbids both building construction and trees within seven kilometres of an airport, but it has not been respected, causing the AoT to pay a large amount of money as compensation to people living near airports in the past.

Nice little caveat thrown into the mix.

it's a strange and probably outdated law - the trees close to the airport contain the noice and it should be up to the property developers if they want to build close to the airport. Some people, for example airport workers, pilots, stuwards, would like to live not too far away from work.

for the existing buildings the government should give proper soundproofing or offer a relocation and buying off the property for a reasonable price

Compensation should be declined for any buildings, houses etc built after the land was designated as, for an airport.

Stuff 'em.

Zoning is what is needed, which would disallow the land being used for residential purposes. What it is used for also needs to be restricted and building codes need to take into account the noise factor and other factors associated with being in a flight path of a major airport.

If somebody builds a house, it should promptly be destroyed.

Nothing like expanding when you haven't solved the initial problems!

I do hope they know what they are doing.

On tv a few weeks ago there was a team of Thai engineers with at least 8 huge binders full of pictures from their 1 year complete inspection of the airport, no corner was ignored. Deathtraps, cut corners and low grade material everywhere.

And they're ready to kick start phase 2? :rolleyes.gif: Some are in a hurry to hand out contracts quickly under this joke of a government. :D

Another ex-employee of AOT confirmed that any complaints aboutmalfeasance and corruption were always muffled at the top, and, employees making such complaints were all fired afterwards. Maybe they can ask the then self-appointed chairman of the airport committee Thaksin. The engineers are like a dog chasing it`s own tail as AOT hasfully refused to cooperate in finding who is responsible for what so that the blame can`t be put on anyone. Maybe they could question the self-appointed Chairman of the Airport Committee at the time, no other than Coward The Great, Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra. :o

Everyone knows that the only land owners around the airport are government insiders who purchased the land years ago before the actual site was announced. Now they want government compensation for noise?

What a load of rollocks!!

The should just spend cash on high speed connections between the two airports, then Thailand would have 3 runways 4 terminals and enough space for 100 million passengers!

Plus no noise complaints from the old airport, enough housing, hotels etc for everyone. and a round of golf between take-offs and landings!

Hope the run way is parallel to the existing one (??). Live not too far from airport.

The third runway will be parallel to the existing west runway within the existing airport area. There has already been a significant amount of work done on it.

The fourth runway (if it is ever built) looks like it will be parallel to the existing east runway on what is now the east side access road. I'm assuming that by then a south terminal will have been built obviating a need to get directly from BangNa-Trat to the (existing) north terminal.
