Hello !

I'm gonna teach French (as a volunteer) in CM Buddhist university for about 10 months and I'm sort of lost with all the visas and different advices I get. It doesn't help that the guy at the Academic Affair of the university seems somewhat more lost than me sometimes... Anyway...

- I heard it is way easier to get an ED visa than a B. I'm gonna take Thai lessons so I would be eligible for an ED visa too. Which one should I try to apply for ? Ed or B ? Once I have an Ed visa, is it possible to get a work permit as a teacher ?

- I am supposed to go to Cambodia for 3 weeks so I was planning to apply for my non-immigrant visa over there but I read some things on the forum that kinda made me think it was a bad idea. I'm not dreaming about the multiple-entry but what is the chance that I got my non-imm visa in PP without too many worries ? If it's definitely an awful place, what would be best ? Ho Chi Minh, KL, or Vientiane ?

- I am French, 23 y/o

Thanks a ton !

I seriously doubt if you will get a work permit with a Non Imm ED visa.

The university should apply for a work permit for you.

then you will be able to get a Non Imm B visa and it will need to be multi-entry.

As you are not paid a salary you will not qualify for a one year extension

so you will have to do a border run every three months.

Do NOT work if you do not have the work permit, as you risk arrest and deportation.

PS. What do you plan to live on whilst in the Kingdom?

A friend of mine used to teach at the university for the monks, in Chiang Mai (at Wat Suan Dok). I think he made a deal with them, to give him a B visa and a work permit, and a few thousand baht of salary PER YEAR, to teach English. You would think if any place would be exempt from work permits, that would be it, but apparently not. But that was several years ago, and the rules change.

Good luck. I don't know about ED visas, but I understand you cannot work or teach with one.
