Hi guys,

I live in Chaweng and was wondering how much I should pay to rent a small 50cc - 125cc bike, preferably automatic. I have seen prices anywhere from 150BHT to 300BHT to rent for one day, but was wondering if that is right and what type of bike I would be best getting?

My second question was as i am living here for about 6 months - a year minimum, would it work out cheaper to buy one or should I stick to renting?

Kind regards,

Marc

If i was you I would buy one for sure. As long as you dont smash the thing up you could sell it for pretty much what you paid.

Honda in Maenam has some new looking but 2nd hand Waves and Clicks which look to be in great nick for about 25,000 baht.

I am sure you could get rid of it after 6 moths for 20,000 so then youve only paid 5,000 for 6 months rental. about 25 baht per day.

Can anyone recommend one brand over another? Is there one "to stay away from??" From a short-term rental perspective they all seem pretty comparable to me.

Go to springer which is at the first turning into Chaweng if you are coming from Lamai, they (used to & I beleive still do) sell then buy back :o

My advice would to buy privately (if you have time). Bike dealers will generally charge alot more...and certainly pay you alot less for a buy-back. For a Honda Wave (all depending on condition, age spec etc. ) you should pay between 15-25000bt...older Mios (automatic) 20-30000bt..newer models (Air Blade, Click, Mio) 30000bt+.These bkes are generally very reliable and repairs/parts are cheap. You may be lucky to find a "distressed seller" and get a real bargain. BE VERY CAREFUL TO CHECK THE DOCUMENTATION before you buy .especially the green book. You will need a signed copy of your passport, letter from Immigration, transfer form, sellers id/passport/company document..which will all have to be produced at the vehicle licensing office. You are also liable to pay and back-tax in the event that the previous owner has not paid it (check the entries in the Green book and for a tax disc on the bike). If you are buying from a Thai take a Thai friend along to check the above. Personally, having ridden both manual and automatic bikes...the automatic is a far better choice.
