Are The Meng Mahn Late This Year?

They're not those beetles with the nice smell and tasty carapace are they ?

Flying termites, looks like a snow storm when they arrive and a carpet of wings when they leave.

There were few last night, but mainly lesser bugs. I expect they will be out in force tonight.

The trick is, to leave a light on out side and go out every half hour and sweep them up under the light and tip them into a bucket with a little water in it. I'm not keen on them myself.

Normally around here the flying ants do come first, though there are always lots of flying vermin. I wouldn't expect the bumper crop of the bigger Mang Mun to show up for a while. We have had a lot of small termites lately. Last night the dogs were kept busy "talking" to all the flashlights out in the fields looking for frogs. Basically folks round here will eat anything that moves or grows. I guess you could call it jungle food or bush tucker.

After my morning brew my mind is clearer and I realized something. The Mang Mun are the big ones that look like giant ants (big thorax) and are a little darker with smaller wings. The second type is the Mang Maow, a type of termite I believe, with bigger "carpet" producing wings. It all gets a little confusing since locals seem to eat everything.

Woke up this morning to find the neighbors swarming over our road and driveway. Asked one guy if he was looking for breakfast. He was very animated when telling me that these things (Mang Mun) get 200 baht per kilo in the market. There are thousands of baht out here he exclaimed.

I hadn't seen them before I went to bed and it was confirmed that they came out just before dawn. The number of Mang Mun were dwarfed by all the other flying things now walking on our driveway. Thought about taking some pictures of the various kinds but hadn't brewed my coffee yet and quite frankly was just too lazy at that time of day.

By the way we have had three consecutive nights of rain and the fields are flooded. What is going on this year?

With the recent rains in the Chiang Mai region we have been getting several swarms. The girl was running around the other night with candles on the ground attracting them in their thousands. She loves them and asked if she could take a couple of the bucket loads up to her village to give her mother and father for a treat.

We were in town today and figured, what the heck, why not get a black-light to help attract the little critters. Anything to help our neighbors get a little more protein in their diets. Might even set one up pond side to keep the fish happy too. Besides it might help keep them away from our doors and windows.

We got completely flooded out this morning and I am sure most of the fish are now free range. We had plans to put a wall around the pond next week. Oh well!

Looking out the front windows this morning one could be forgiven for thinking this to be lakeside property. Last years flood was reported to be the worst in 20+ years but today is worse. Our new concrete road and driveway became a viewing platform for the neighbors to survey the extent of the flood. There were still a few bugs around though. Also a few snakes, lizards, mice, frogs and our dogs having a great time chasing everything that moved.

And some people think upcountry life is boring!

Might even set one up pond side to keep the fish happy too. Besides it might help keep them away from our doors and windows.

We picked up some lights at a shop between the Baan Lan Na Hotel and the bridge over the Rimkok River. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet. People around here said that the good ones cost over 1000 baht. We bought the best they had (Philips) for 380 baht with the starter box so don't know if we got the "good kind" or not.

They don't carry these lights at Home Mart or the other big DIY shops. You have to go to an electrical shop. I would think Somnuk Karn Fai Faa or any other one would have them too.

My partner just puts lit candles on the ground and then collects the insects when they land. She managed to collect a couple of buckets full the other day and we took them up to her family for a special treat.
