I'll be coming back to Thailand shortly with my brother to look for a condo down the coast from Pattaya. Wondering if hiring a car is the best move or just to bus it around. What are the pitfalls in hiring a car, other than dealing with the chaos on the roads? I know it's not really much cheaper to hire a car in Thailand than it is in Australia, but as it would probably only be for a week or so and cost will be split two ways, that's not an issue.

Hire the car,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,much easier to run around outside Patttaya than to pay some baht bus. Sounds like you are from Down Under so the wrong side of the road driving will not be an issue,,,,,,,,,,you guys drive on the wrong side too.

Unless you can get a deal with a baht bus driver per day or for the week with unlimited mileage then hire a car, there's plenyt of places around as well as some of the Internatonally known companies and for 1k ~ 1.5k a day will likely be cheaper and less hassle than a baht bus.

Think in your circumstances hiring a car would be better, but at the same time will have to get used to the chaos on the roads pretty quickly, also make sure you have an international license with you as well

Costs from reputable companies are basically on par with other countries..

I rented while on extended holidays here before buying one myself, the only factor that is a must is proper rental car insurance - all the small road side places (one man operations) seem to only have personal car insurance regardless of if they say they have 1st class or whatever.

Any real company will be able to show you the insurance document that states it is for rental use.

With only personal cover on the car you are not covered when renting it.

There are a few big names and local companies that will offer good rates during the summer months.

Agree with Cuban, go with a reputable company, so you have A1 insurance cover.

First time in Thailand I hired a car long term from the reputable company "North Wheels", they are based in Chiang Mai with an office in Chiang Rai also, so no help to you in Pattaya. Whilst renting this car, it got the rear passenger off side door smashed, it was parked in a hotel car park at the time! And the day I was taking it back to the hire company, I hit a dog, which totalled the front end, a tow truck had to be sent out to pick the car up as there was no way it could be driven again, without putting a new radiator on it.

It cost me the grand total of seven thousand baht (I had to pay the premium excess, which was in the hire agreement I signed), the total damage done to the car I would say was between fifty to sixty thousand baht, without the A1 cover I would have been liable for the full amount.

When I said using the bus was an option, I didn't mean a baht bus but one of the big buses that leave from Pattaya bus station. I should imagine they would go right down the coast.

Insurance - and your driving licence...many places accept any driving licence to hire and will sell extra insurance cover as well.....but in the event of a prang, you may still find you are not covered, the reason given you do not have a Thai or international driving licence....do not rely on your own national licence.
