Anyone see their (EVA AIR) loyalty program changed?

Recently they changed the level and miles required for upgrades.

Looks like they join the big cariers and no more cheap deals

Anyone see their (EVA AIR) loyalty program changed?

A week or so ago I received an email from Evergreen Club. Didn't bother to read it too closely as I don't fly often enough to accrue any serious mileage during the mile's validity. Therefore, I buy on price and not mileage programs...and EVA has far and away the best prices on the places I need to go.

We need a budget airline to open up this route and smash the monoply of the more or less state run airlines - this has happened to Hong Kong

oasis, a budget airline flying London Hong Kong, went bust almost a month ago.

the other long haul airline to be flying London - Kuala Lumphur never materialised, after being announced in january 2007. Branson's Virgin was involved in creation of this company, so a serious partner - but probably the other party withdraw

The partner air line is air asia and to the best of my knowledge is still going to happen.

Why would I fly Eva Air

when i have so many better options like Ethihad, Emirates , Quatar Airways and Malaysian Airlines.

Compared to Eva all above airlines have better food , inflight service, attitude , Fluent English speaking inflight staff and

great facilities while in transit at their base airports. They actually pamper you.

THEY FLY DIRECT TO LONDON AND NONE OF THE ABOVE DO, also i use eva for at least six flights a year and find them to be excelent in every way

The only good (base) airport for the above airlines is Dubai....

The service on EVA has become steadily worse over the last 5 years. The food has always been terrible. I stll frequently use the London - BKK service though. The timings are good they are pretty much always on time and it is non-stop. Aside from this they are actually rather shoddy and well below the standards of most, stopping, M. East airlines :o

My kids are flying out to Bangkok from Manchester UK on the 19th July for two weeks here in Thailand. They are flying Emirates through Dubai and the price is 1073 pounds including taxes. last year it was 800 pounds. This is the cheapest flight that i can get in this period and my agent states that all the other European airlines and far in excess of the figure.

Not just EVA.

Cheers, Rick

I flew with EVA once and found them to be OK.

But what about China Airlines?????

Have you tried them?

I have used them on the last 15 or so trips (except Emirates at Xmas and would not use them again).

I fly from Newcastle to Amsterdam and the direct to bangkok.

Cost is £555 for an adult fare.

Quite a bit less than EVA.

Only difference I found is no tv in the seat in front of you, but I usually have a few cold ones and sleep most of the way anyway. :o

I have been flying China Airlines for the past few years. They are as good as EVA if you are flying economy. I have found it is much less money if you book your ticket from Thailand, return to Thailand. Last year it was about $900 round trip, six month ticket, meaning you can change your return date at no charge during those six months. They also offer one year tickets for a bit more. This year's ticket was $1,0012. Not bad for what has happened to fuel costs. I did see they are reducing the baggage allowance, if the flight originates from North America, but since I book from Thailand I haven't seen that. My return ticket says two 32 kilo bags are allowed. But of course to do this you must have a year visa. I get an O-A while I am in the USA, although the price of the visa has gone up a bit, it is still the best way to go!

I forgot to mention, my flights are from Phuket to San Francisco, through Taipei, return to Phuket. No more having to go to Bangkok and then pay for a domestic flight or domestic bagage charges, that can be more than your airfare. I have heard if you fly Thai Airlines connecting to your international flight, that they will give you the two bags at 32 K each at no extra charge.

Cheers Colin. I was just curious as to the prices they quoted. Seems to be about right.

Eva tried reducing baggage allowances in order to keep the costs down, but obviously that wasn't enough. You can be pretty sure all the other airlines are going to be making adjustments over the upcoming months.

Funnily enough, I was watching CNN yesterday - and apparently the other cost-saving measure is that airlines will now fly SLOWER in order to reduce fuel consumption.

I have to say - slower is not good. I would rather pay higher prices than fly slower.

I just got a rude suprise from CHINA AIRLINES.

My wife and daughter already bought their summer tix back the States. I was waiting to buy mine. Then I read the following on their website:

*. Weight of each bag may not exceed 70 lb (32 Kg) for ticket issued before April 15, 2008

*. Weight of each bag may not exceed 50 lb (23 Kg) for ticket issued or reissued on and after April 15, 2008.

http://www.china-airlines.com/en/check/check_ba2-1.htm

I'd like to change carriers, but my family has already booked, so it looks like I'm stuck with the reduced baggage allowance.

Think twice about China Airlines. Is the trend with other transpacific carriers (Eva, etc.) with regard to baggage? I know AirAsia now charging per checked bag....

Stansted or Manchester to Kaula Lumphur with Aia Asia X will commence end 08/early 09 using A340/600 Airbus. Branson is still a large investor in Air Asia X. Reason service has been delayed is obtaining suitable aircraft !

London-Bangkok why not try Air New Zealand example fare economy £385.00 return in Sept inc taxes then low cost carrier ex Macau / Bangkok with Air Asia total costs £500 or less !

The Qataris are still driving around happily in their Landcruisers for about 3.5 THB per liter...

So, would you swap with them? You the cheap fuel and them the cheap booze & girls?

Right, didn't think so. :o

EVA and Ci are both hurting. Expect more price rises and reduction of service and less freebees, etc.

China Airlines, EVA Air report big first-quarter losses

Monday May 5, 2008

Taiwanese carriers China Airlines and EVA Air reported first-quarter losses of TWD2.97 billion ($97.4 million) and TWD2.29 billion respectively.

The airlines, which reported the results in filings with the Taiwan Stock Exchange cited by Bloomberg News, each blamed high fuel costs for the poor results.

CI's loss was widened from a TWD806 million loss in the prior-year quarter, while EVA's loss compared to a TWD331 million loss last year. CI's revenue increased 8.6% to TWD31 billion while EVA's rose 6% to TWD23.8 billion. EVA said its first-quarter fuel costs soared 34% year-over-year, while CI said its overall costs increased 21.7% to TWD29.7 billion.

Just to confirm the OPs original post.

EVA Air Economy BKK/LHR/BKK is now:

Adult 1: 40,800 * 1

Taxes: 11,295 * 1

Total Fares 52,095

The Elite price is now:

Adult 1 56,400 * 1

Taxes 11,295 * 1

Total Fares 67,695

When I took the Elite flight a couple of years ago the good pound exchange rate of around 72 baht per pound meant the ticket cost about 650 pounds. However the combination of fuel price increases, poorer exchange rate (now around 61 per pound) and the increased taxes at Heathrow etc... the cost has increase to around 1100 pounds.

An increase of around 70 percent.

I have to go to the UK as my mother is ill, otherwise I would not buy a ticket. I wonder how many others will decide that its getting too expensive to fly???

(by the way I like EVA Air - and hope they survive this)

Posted

Nows the time to support EVA if thats who you want to survive. Tough times means some carriers wont make it. If you like EVA air, then better to support it where you can.

Ci can survive because its 70pct TAiwan Govt. EVA is supported only by Evergreen Shipping.

Domestic airlines announce plans to increase fares to reflect price of oil

STAFF WRITER, WITH CNA

Saturday, May 10, 2008, Page 4 Domestic air carriers will raise their air fares by an average of 30 percent for international flights starting next month to reflect surging fuel costs, the airlines announced yesterday.

Bruce Chen (陳鵬宇), a public relations official for China Airlines (CAL), Taiwan’s largest carrier, said that the summer is usually a busy travel season and that because of the cost of rising fuel prices, the airline is planning to hike air fares starting on June 15.

Air fare hikes will peak in July and August, Chen said. EVA Airways Corp spokesman Nieh Kuo-wei (聶國偉) said that the fuel price for air carriers has risen from US$84 a barrel last year to US$145 a barrel. Fuel costs used to account for 20 percent of the airline’s operations costs, but the ratio has now risen to 50 percent, Nieh said.

“The air carrier has no option but to adjust its air fares,” Nieh said.

UNI Airways Corp has hiked its air fares since March and will adjust it further next month.

The airlines’ ticket prices are expected to reach a peak late next month or early July.

CAL and UNI have made the biggest fare increeases on their long-haul flight routes, such as to Europe or the US.

Nieh said that although the price hike will average 30 percent, it still will not cover the expenses of fuel costs.

He said that the ticket price hike will surely impact the tourism market, but the carrier “has no other choice.”

He said that EVA lost NT$1.8 billion (US$59.02 million) last year, but that the air carrier has lost up to NT$2.3 billion in the first quarter of this year alone.

“If EVA Airways is suffering serious losses and is forced to cut or suspend certain flight routes, then it will be even more damaging to the passengers,” he added.

On top of that, the Dutch gov. add a extra flytax (starts in june) of 45 euro (2250 bath) on every longdistance flight (out of europe).

time to fix the old bycicle

With oil /jet fuel prices at current levels its only a matter of time before we see massive increases in domestic(Thailand) airfares.

Done.

Thai Airways increases fuel surcharge by 15 to 20 %

:o

As other said : no escape.

All airlines have to increase their prices. The party is over.

The insane growth of air traffic is not sustainable.

Do you remember "before" ? When flying was... a luxuary ? It will probably be back to the future. :D

Nobody know? In Thailand, Kerosen for plane is made with rice, farmers use petrol to do the rice. Petrol more expensive = rice more expensive = kerosen more expensive = etc... Lol...

Utter Rubbish.....or a poor attempt at a joke! ......Kerosene (otherwise known as Jet A1 when used to power aircraft) is derived from crude oil after refining and a fairly intense distillation process.

Kerosine is the American word for parafin
