Government improving services to residents of restive South

BANGKOK, May 1 (TNA) -- Senior Thai government agency officials on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) designed to bring better social services and raise the quality of life for people living in the three troubled southern provinces – Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat.

Pranai Suwanarat, director of the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre (SBPAC), said his agency would cooperate with a spectrum of government agencies including the interior and public health ministries in offering improved public services in the three provinces so that local residents will receive requested assistance in a prompt and efficient manner.

Most residents in the three provinces are ethnic Malay Muslims and their livelihoods have changed significantly following the renewed outbreak of violence beginning in January 2004. Since then some 3,000 persons have died in violence affecting Buddhists, Muslims, security personnel, teachers and other civil servants, as well as a spectrum of local civilians in all walks of life.

Initially, services will be provided at district offices, government hospitals and other offices in the three provinces will be upgraded, said Mr. Pranai. (TNA)-E111, E006
