Mobile Computing - Cell Phones

Featured Replies

That "Mobile Computing Summary" topic was so informative I thought this one could get to be as well.

Which phones are best for internet? I will probably buy 2 phones (my Bt 1,200 Ericsson is dying, I think) .. or a phone and a modem .. one for voice (no camera) and another for data .. probably 2 sim cards.

I'm in the market and my head is swimming with which phone does what for whom.

My first experiences with GPRS were with a Solomon modem. That was before EDGE. That modem was dependable but the connections were VERY slow. I decided that I could buy a decent phone for what the new EGDE capable Solomon cost.

I still have my Nokia 2626 phone. It is useless for the Internet but still a good phone. My Nokia N80 was pretty good but started having problems, mostly (I think) because I dropped it. I did a lot of research and decided that the Nokia E51 was perfect for what I wanted. It has the best EDGE specs as well as WLAN and 3G capabilities and it was much cheaper than the N80. Anyways, I swap the Dtac and AIS SIM card between the phones although it appears the AIS card will be staying in the 2626. Dtac EDGE has been MUCH better lately.

Check out this web site from EdgeThailand,,,,,,,,,,they offer some good info about Mobile services

My Nokia 3110 classic cost me just over 4000 baht from Tesco Lotus and gives me a very stable connection with a DTAC simcard. It supports bluetooth or a standard mini USB cable (the same type that comes bundled with most digital cameras). If you don't have either you can buy a bluetooth dongle or USB cable for a few hundred baht. You have to keep it plugged in to the mains because the battery only lasts a few hours with an EDGE connection running.

Well for me and from experience..Dtac is by fqar better and faster than 1 2 Call and i believ you can get un limited on Dtac pre paid now.( unfotunatley my company gets me a dog slow 12 Call for free), i have a Ericcson and a Nokia and the nokia is alot quicker on a cable, unfortunately if you have Vista like me then its a real pain getting the Bluetooth to work as they havent made(to my knowledge) ant Vista bluetooth drivers yet..

So in a ideal world the best combo fo me would be Dtac nokia cable connection unfortunately it just aint a ideal world...

Ow by the way.... if you are on post paid 12 Call theyn you can buy a second sim with the same number used for data so you the caller will not get anwser machine while you are surfing its 100 banht then 20 baht a month for more info look on their post paid website..

I have mentioned before that my Nokia E51 will ring if I have a voice call when I am online. I can answer and when I disconnect the call, the phone automatically resumes the Internet connection. I know that works with AIS but have not tried it with Dtac. What would be great would be a phone that can use both cards at the same time. It's a pain changing SIM cards back and forth. The way AIS is working now, I could eliminate AIS and use only Dtac but I have been using AIS for a number of years and don't want to change numbers.

My phone does that aswell Gary A the only problem is it is intermitent and some get through and others dont, no idea why..i thing you can get a dual sim holder but not to sure whether this works like the LIne 2 feature where it auto switches depending on who is calling..

Do any of the modems or phones have USB connections that draw power from the computer? I already have/carry enough adapters (power & usb) with computer, camera, battery charger, phone charger ..

But I guess having a good and fast connection is more important than a bit more convenience.

It seems that DTAC is definately the way to go .. and since I have had AIS for donkeys' years, a 2 phone system is in order. I suppose that means matching the phones to save the hassle of one additional charger .. then figuring out how to keep track of which is which.

klikster .. answering my modem :o

At present it looks like good candidates are:

Nokia E51

Nokia 3110

I know Samsung phones charge of the usb cable, not sure about Nokia...

Nokia E51 also supports HSDPA so when DTAC and AIS introduce that you'll be ready to go. Nokia 3110 classic doesn't support it and doesn't charge via the USB cable so you have to keep it plugged into the mains. Apart from that it works very well.

Both my Sony Ericsson k750i and k790i draw power/charge from the USB port. Fortunate, because I'm often connected to the Internet through the phone 12 hours or more some days.

Does one of these models stand out as being better than the other?

I had the k750i first but when the k790i came out with EDGE support I upgraded to it. The k750i only had GPRS and suspect it is not sold now. Also, the k790i has a 3.2MP Sony CyberShot camera built in and larger LCD display. The wife has the k750i now. :o
