Why to Thailand and Not Elsewhere?

Pretty simple in my case. I wasn't looking for some one or some thing in Thailand. I was working in Japan and just happened to meet a nice girl from Thailand and we hit it off. So it's Thailand because my partner happens to be Thai, not because I came to Thailand looking for something.

On a different thought, it was almost Romania and a girl from Romania that I met and hit it off with. All I knew was one thing. If I was ever going to meet a girl that I would want to marry, it wouldn't be an American girl.

Thats funny, my post would be almost the same, except, of course, in the appropriate places substitute Thai girl with Thai boy and American girl with American boy :o

Come on don't be shy and beat around the bush, you are an aged whoremonger. You like to pay cheap women to engage you in one-way sexual gratification, and you are devoid of any feelings or emotions as you ejaculate your way through Thai womanhood or what ever else it is that takes your fancy. You are a Prince.

I always say that describes 99.9 of us, but that really seems to upset some people. :D

:o Well I am the 0.1% and happy to be that, and not the other 99.9% who (if I interpet your description above correctly) see Thai ladies plentiful cheap pieces of live meat for sexual gratification.

Yes that does upset me. I hate Thais thinking I am one of the 99.9% who see their women or any woman that way, and I know that many Thais DO think of us Farangs that way.

To each his own , but I do not like being assumed to be what I am not, and never wish to be. I have never been with a prostistute, Bar girl or whatever because I like true love being in the equation first (both from the male and female).

I am not trying to be nasty here or make accusations, but the honest truth is that I have met a good number of men over the years that made simular statements to yours - that they were not interested in sex workers. The strange thing is that a good number of these guys would change their minds as soon as they met a few scantily clad ladyboys.

Experiences like that make me really question how much to believe what people say. :o

Hi Ulysses,

Yes I know that you are correct. I also know that Thai ladies change their minds as well over time.

My first wife "I will never ever be a bar girl" was only out for my money nothing more and then dump me.

I took her on a Honeymoon to Phuket and (at her request) to Pattaya which I genuinely had never heard of (my first time in Asia).

I was embarrassed to be at some of the bars with my wife that she selected to go to, but I noticed her interest in the activities of the young ladies and how her mind and eyes were opening to the opportunities/possibilities. After we divorced (after only 4 months) I was told by her interpreter that she was after causal and fun partners on the Internet dating sites and not husbands from then on.

Back to Me. I am the genuine article. I accept that once here in Thailand, you quickly learn how easy it is to find "interested" young lovely ladies but I genuinely (if my current marriage should fail -heaven forbid) would be seeking a genuine loving relationship (same as I have now). Casual may be fun and no commitment, but there is something very special waking up in the morning beside a person who you truly love and who truly loves you.

I fell in love and lust with Thailand as a tourist, five years ago. I went back home, sold everything, and am still here. I like the weather, people, work, retirement, beaches, sex, etc. You do not even need to speak the language or eat spicy food. And even at 32 baht to the US$, it is still cheap.

Cool post PB! :o

Well, at least it's honest. :D (Also on the part of Ulysses of course.. not many people admitting this sort of thing these days, which is strange, but interesting.)

i am here because i love thailand! i love thailand because i am here! whichever comes first. as soon as this love ends, i will go away to elsewhere. but i hope this love will never end. i offer my sympathies to each and everyone who has to stay here unhappily and reluctantly.............

I come for the good weather and the nice people.

Nightlife and chasing girls does not interest me.

:o

Pretty much the same really.

No snow, No freezing rain, More people smile here than they do in the UK, I dont care if its a false smile or a real smile but it makes you smile back, hmmmm I dont like Thai food so I dont eat it, I didnt come here for Thai sex so I dont do it, Its cheaper, Its hotter, I feel more relaxed, You can get what you want, if you look for it and maybe import it, if you can't get what you need then you can usually find something close to it, tired of the rat race back home, tired of having to wake up and go to work, interested in the local history of Thai/Cambodia/Vietnam, a trip to Scotland is OK but a week in say Cambodia just opens your eyes, a million reasons, I just like it here.

Actually I'll edit the post further.

When I read the newspapers from the UK, The country is being overrun by Immigrants, Sign posts are in a language now in some places that only the local immigrants can read, Britain is slowly losing its identity. So when we moan about Thailand and for those who say "oooo they don't do it like they do at home", Just remember, If you don't consider Thailand as being home, then your not really living here.

Thailand is NOT a Thai Version of the UK or USA or where ever your homeland is, If you don't feel at home in Thailand then you will never make it your home.

I feel that I like it here because at least Thailand wants to keep its own identity and not just merge in with the others like the UK who bend over backwards to do anything to be politically correct.

I was once proud to live in Europe, Now I'm proud to live in Thailand.

I'll set this off so nobody gets the idea I don't like Thailand.

I hear lots of sad tales about being used, ripped and disillusioned there.

Why do I keep going back? I suppose it's a case of me and the Thais using each other.

I can always get a cheap flight, stay in a decent hotel, eat well, date and really chill out well within my budget.

They want my money, which I don't mind parting with if I get what I want in return.

I don't love the place or the people but it's predictable there and I'm just too lazy to look for a suitable alternative.

Can you re-write this so I can understand it?

Sure thing, anything to help.

Any particular language take your fancy? :D

Wrong Turn, you sure came to ask the right person. :o

'qwertz' was the master of languages. :D This gentleman speaks several languages and had once worked as a translator for former New York Mayor - Rudy Giuliani.

And Angela Merkel,

Yo TB, thanks for the plug - and you remembered! - but it was only their correspondence, nothing live.

How nice to see you're still online, best regards from Germany.

I don't understand what Wrong Turn hasn't understood, do you?

"Freedom" is the first thing that comes to mind for me. I like the unregulated "rawness" that allows a person to choose to do the sense-able thing...or not..."up to you."

My wonderful Thai fiance certainly makes me have a more serious commitment to Thailand as well.

I also find the opportunities within Thailand to be more "within reach".

I love riding these little motorcycles, especially in the mountains. Some of the best riding to be had...possibly in the world. Nice winding roads, excellent views, good road conditions, great riding climate all year. On top of it, affordable and dependable bikes that are amazing to ride, and there is always a repair shop within a short push if needed!

I also love it in my fiances hilltribe village. It has the atmosphere I have always dreamed about experiencing.

If the bikes are so dependable, why are there so many repair shops?

Must admit, if I left Thailand, I would miss the deplorable state of the roads, the stinking shanty towns/ghettos, the fires the Thais light next to the roads, the way people drive/ride, the general lawlessness, the way you can bung the BiB's a few baht to get out of just about any situation, yeh I would miss Thailand. :o

I live here because I was lucky enough to get a work here. And mostly I love every minute I can spend here (food, weather, atmosphere).

There are so many repair shops because there are so many bikes. I have road motorcycles in Thailand everywhere, as well as touring the country top to bottom. The shops are usually most handy for general maintenance. I could do it myself easy enough, but for what they charge, it is not worth getting my hands dirty...literally. Having shops everywhere is comforting to know just in case something was to go wrong. But I have never actually had one of these bikes let me down. The only time we have made an unplanned stop en-route was for flat tires. And you can't blame the bike for that. Thats amazing considering the miles I have rode and the abuse I have given these little bikes!

I live in Chiang Mai because that is where my wife comes from and where she wants to be.

That is OK by me because I like Chiang Mai - and Thailand in general.

(But I don't like all the visa nonsense).

I fell in love with Cyprus when I was in my early 20s, and eventually decided to set up there for my retirement.

Had a house in a village on a hill overlooking Paphos harbour for 10 years. Beautiful place and I love the Med and its way of life.

Still miss it, even though Cyprus has changed for the worse over the last decade.

Speaking Greek moderately well, and with a bit of a sun tan, I could almost pass as a local.

Will never integrate into Thai society like that.

But love of my wife trumped love of the Med, so here I am (well, actually at this moment I am in Singapore working).

And Chiang Mai is certainly no hardship, and low cost of living makes income from my occasional work go further and allows me to live well enough.

Number one reason has to be the weather. The only place I EVER want to see ice again is in my glass.

Number two is a laid back life style that is impossible to find in my home country. A friend of mine got a ticket for a red light violation in California and it cost him $535. I'm certainly not advocating traffic violations but a $535 fine is way over the top.

Number three is that things here are still a LOT cheaper than most other places. During my last trip back to the US, I had severe sticker shock while in the supermarket.

Number four is the culture difference. My Thai wife actually gets upset when I try to help out with household chores. My job is to provide and her job is to take care of me. DON'T get the idea that she is a docile clinging type. She is anything but docile.

Finally there is a live and let live attitude. I mind my own business and keep a low profile and my neighbors do the same.

I fell in love with Thailand on my first holiday here back in 94....pretty much decided then to try and relocate..took almost 10 years to wind up affairs, property, jobs in US...finally made the move and no regrets. I love the food, weather, the people, the culture the price and especially how it isn't america-even the lawlessness has an odd attraction at times frustrating as it is.....it is a far from perfect place....but can't for me find a better alternative. Happily married to a special Thai lady, and more in love with Thailand than before....

Sounds like me 8 years ago. What a rush riding in BK. Does CM still have a lot of local mountain bikers? I biked the mountains around CM for three years until a car hit me head-on after a ride. My litespeed was stolen from the police station and the medical bills set me back a bit. Haven't really biked seriously since then. I might be moving to CM soon and might get back into it.
