why dont the government in thailand, start to realize that a very high percentage per capita of deaths on the roads compared to say the UK or most european countries, is an outrage, im from the UK and all children are taught road awareness from a very young age. ie: the police coming round to your school and teaching how to use a bike on the road, then there was the wonderful green cross code man haha, well it made young children listen, driving on the wrong side of the road seems quite acceptable here, well the police do it so i must b ok ??, pulling out of a turning on the wrong side and not looking seems ok as well, the list gos on and on then theres the wonderful driving test ?? stevie wonder could pass that, how about bald tyres ?? is there a minimum tread requirement. if so the roads should be empty, ive lived here for 6 years, driving a car and a motorbike, how ive not added to the death toll by wanting to murder some of the drivers myself i will never know, how many vehicles over here would be legally roadworthy if they was in the UK. i think not many, then theres gas ommisions requirements, that these lovely little trucks blast out black smoke, i could go on and on thats enough,, oh how about babys on bikes no safety no crash helmuts 4 on a bike ok ok thats enough

Unfortunately this is one of the downsides of living in a third world country. Third world is not just about GNP etc, it's about mentality as well. Need I say more! :o

How about fewer folks whinging when they try to restrict alcohol sales?

I do think there should be tire tread checks and tickets handed out for those with overplugged (one plug might be argued as still safe... but you got folks out there trying to plug 3-4 holes in the same tire) and bald tires.

If the government would enforce the law and require farang to have valid motorcycle licenses many farang lives would be saved.

i agree 1 of many things that r no good, how about the 1000cc bikes that r rented 2 farangs who would have no chance to get on the road back in there own country and have no experience on a powerful death trap

Your question is flawed....

In a vertical society (everyone has their place on a rigid social scale, with subordinates and superiors) the government doesn't "care." It's only purpose is to "control" to keep everyone in their place. Hence, the source of most government instability in 3rd world countries.

As a result, vexing social problems like public safety and corruption never really get solved. These problems only get lip-service, not substantive action.

I think the government has not taxed the sale/rental of Buddhist amulets and garlands which are used to festoon vehicles and prevent accidents.

:o

But seriously, 'the government' is little more than a loose alliance of godfathers and eminent families. Governance here is by self-interest. Since these people travel about it Mercs, Volvos etc often with police escorts, there is no incentive for them to improve road safety. Also some politicians are owners of hospitals and have a vested interest in increasing the number of traffic accidents as they are 'good earners' for them. As they are for the police, who have a big say in the running of the country.

Exactly, and if the laws were enforced correctly then there would be nowhere near the 20 thousand or so senseless and unnecessary Thai deaths too.

Can You say Population Control ??? The government wants to have the accidents and deaths.

Take a drive from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai and count how many places have dashed lines on curves and hills where it is impossible to see if there is another car coming.

They spend millions of baht on breathe testing equipment but have a 30% luxury tax on safety seats for children ! Gotta get the cash one way or another.

You're right to question it, and my apology for the reference.

Technically, Thailand is a "developing" country: somewhere in limbo between 3rd world and "developed" countries. However, the conditions we talk about in this thread are definitely a throwback to the 3rd world.
