Adsl In Jomtien Condo.

Hi,

I shall be moving to pattaya in a couple of weeks time and need to rent a place and get ADSL installed. I've only stayed in hotels before, so have little knowledge on the basics of having my own phoneline. I'd appreciate if you could answer some questions I have.

1) I'd like to rent a condo in Jomtien, am I correct in thinking that any condo in jomtien will be able to recieve ADSL?

2) I will have to rent a condo with a direct phone line, does this have to be with tt&t? Assuming it does, are property management firms likely to know which company the phone line is with?

3) When I find a suitable condo what do I do to get the phone line running? I have no experience of this whatsoever, so even if it may seem obvious to you please reply anyway. :o

4) Once the phone line is running I will need to get ADSL installed, do I just contact tt&t to get the ADSL switched on, then choose an ISP?

5) I currently use 512/256 in the UK, with a contention ratio of 50/1 which is fine for what I use it for. I don't download or upload a lot of information and will be mainly using it between the hours of 00:00 and 12:00 in Thailand. Which ISPs and packages do you think would be best for me to have a similar performance to my current set up? Reliability is important to me.

6) Where should I go to sign up with the ISP you suggest?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and for any answers you may have,

Some short answers,

1) I'd like to rent a condo in Jomtien, am I correct in thinking that any condo in jomtien will be able to recieve ADSL?

No, adsl only available through TT&T lines, a lot of condo's have only a main phonecable from ToT

2) I will have to rent a condo with a direct phone line, does this have to be with tt&t? Assuming it does, are property management firms likely to know which company the phone line is with?

I guess not, I'm selling some condo's with broadband inside, and the real estate agents are not even interested to put in the list of things installed!

3) When I find a suitable condo what do I do to get the phone line running? I have no experience of this whatsoever, so even if it may seem obvious to you please reply anyway.

Ask the condo management about the fee for allowing you to put in a private line, pay this fee, then you go to the TT&T office, pay the TT&T fee (around 3000 Baht)and 10 days later you'll have your line

4) Once the phone line is running I will need to get ADSL installed, do I just contact tt&t to get the ADSL switched on, then choose an ISP?

When you order the phoneline at TT&T you specify you need adsl as well. They'll give you a list of isp's and you will sign up on the spot. One stop service!

5) I currently use 512/256 in the UK, with a contention ratio of 50/1 which is fine for what I use it for. I don't download or upload a lot of information and will be mainly using it between the hours of 00:00 and 12:00 in Thailand. I have Ji-net, 256/128 at 1658Baht/month. Works very well for me and up till now is reliable...(512/256 available at 2450Baht +7%vat)

6) Where should I go to sign up with the ISP you suggest?

Same answer as 4). You sign everything up at the TT&T office, phoneline, adsl service and ISP

Good luck!

Thanks a lot Monty, very helpful as always

I've read in some of the threads in the past that some people have difficulty getting a phone line installed, should this not be a problem in Jomtien?

If I start on the Ji-net 256/128 package and find it's inadequate is it relatively easy to upgrade to the 512/256 package?

Finally, could you suggest some places I could check out for renting a condo in Jomtien? I'd prefer 2 bedrooms so that I can use one as an office and my budget is about 20000-30000, but I can be flexible on that if necessary.

Thanks once more,

I think you will have no problems finding a condo (2rooms) at this price. You might want to try Jomtien Beach Condo (Rim Talay)200 meters before the Siam Commercial bank on Beach road, View Talay 2 before the Hanuman(Monkey God) Statue always has a large selection of rooms, Chateau Dale might have something but is in the higher end category....

The best thing to do would probably be to come here and stay in a small hotel and see what areas you like in Jomtien...then check the listings in the free magazines in the supermarkets...such as Pattaya Trader and Real Estate magazine( they have websites as well)...Happy searching :o

Thanks pluto,

Yes, my plan is to stay in a cheap hotel for a week and spend some time looking at different places. I shall take a look at your suggestions.

Conan, been on almost exactly the same quest recently as you are about to start.

Finally decided to rent a house in Jomtien Condotel Village, Thappraya Road opposite View Talay 1. For 25000 Bt a Month I have a 3 Bedroom house with nice furnishings. One BD I changed to an Office / Studio by putting the Bed into one of the other Bedrooms, which now is the guest room, making my Thai GF happy by being able to invite a lot of her family for stay here .... (No, I think I have this in control now, just joking ...)

In August ADSL was not possible, but in early September I got notice that all TT&T Lines are now open to ADSL. Got mine working about 2 weeks ago, on Jinet 512/256 for 2600 Bt including VAT. Works fine, no problems so far.

Just a warning: There are limitis on the number of ADSL Connections on all Phone line groups, saw a list with free ADSL slots for available number sets; some had 20 or so available, some were already full. So check your number with TT&T before you sign up a rental contract ....

They told me that Naklua area which was openend to ADSL some time ago has already a lot of places with no free ADSL connection.

Thanks Sunny,

Renting a house is a possible option too, I'll see if any units are available in Jomtien Condotel Village when I arrive, sounds like a decent sized house.

As I feared it's not going to be easy to find a rental where I'm guaranteed to receive ADSL, should be fun trying to ensure I get all of my requirements. :o

Sunny, please where did you see that list??? That's what I'm looking for, but the girls at carrefour do not know anything :o

My personal opion is you are much better off renting a nice 2/3 bedroom house, unless you particually want to be in Jomtien and be in a condo.I spent a year in Jomtien plaza, although a nice place,I found it noisy,as these condo's always have people renervating their rooms. Also the road can be very noisy, allday you can hear jetskies and speedboats reveing up even if you are high up.

If you can drive rent a motor bike and have a look around the small village complexes dotted everywhere. Also check out the areas at night, very important to see if there are dogs barking next door alnight.

Yeah, my first thoughts were to rent a house, however I'm single and travel frequently so am a little worried about security whilst I'm away for a week or so. I thought that a condo in a fairly busy area may be more secure than a house a little out of town.

All good advice, I'm going to spend a good week or so checking out all the options before I sign any contract.

Yuvi, I talked to some TT&T techie (friend of friend's friend, you know ...) and he showed me this list. Sorry I did not make a copy, though.

Conan, the security is definitely something to consider. My house is in a Compound with 24 hour security. Had a bit of a hard time the first Days to get past them, so they are quite effective, I guess.

But you are probably right, Security in a (well maintained) Condo Complex is probably even tighter.

Well, I eventually got a house which was supposed to have ADSL already, turns out it's actually ISDN on a TOT phoneline. May be good enough for my needs, but I doubt it. No drivers for the ISDN box either, so currently downloading them via dial up, forgot how slow that is.

Think I may have to contact tt@t in the morning to see if I can get a line with ADSL put in here as TOT told me they were full in this area. Anyone know what tt@t charge for this?
