as per previous post, we were adopted by a stray cat.

She has this routine in the morning to join me for breakfast. Basically pull up a chair next to me as i eat breakfast, she jumps on it, and starts doing all these contortionist acts, and when i dont pay attention, she will give a soft bite on the arm / elbow ( teeth lightly touch my skin ). Used to be harder, until she received a few whacks on the head.

Just curious as to what element of feline social culture requires such "affection".

2 possibilities:

1) She wants you to share your food with her, and by not doing so you are behaving badly by her lights. If what you are eating isn';t something she would like, you have only to give her some and let her figure that out. If it IS something she'd like, you can continue to hold out and annoy her, or let her have a little bit (every day, for ever more. Don't worry, you'll come to enjoy the company).

OR

2) She just wants your attention and is perturbed that you seem absorbed in something other than her. This is very typical cat behvior, also occurs when their owners watch TV/DVD, read something, or work at the computer. My cat has solved the 1st problem by simply climbing atop the TV and curling up there, so that I am then raptly watching her (or so it seems). Same deal with the computer, she climbs atop the monitor. For books and papers, she is stuck with the time honored (but harder to live with) cat technique of sprawling across the book/newspaper/papers so that I can't read them and must lpay attention to her.

Welcome to the world of cats. They are rather delicate creatures and subject to a number of physical and psychological ills, but 2 things they never suffer from:

- insomnia

- low self-esteem

Mega Lol, yes, ours sleeps 85% of the day. I recon its #2, she never begs for food when ur eating or sniffs around, and most definately looks for attention when i am working, or with the wife watching TV.

You are ( in her eyes ) not paying attention. Our cats vie for the monitor top, next favourite, is the scanner/printer. Then the direct sit on your hand while you hold the mouse.

Ha Ha Ha....

Sheryl,

I loved your post it rings VERY true.

May i add - waking you up in the morning at some early hour for food and attention because she has already had her 26 hours of sleep and is bored.

The computer - I have a flat screen so she sits on the floor and meows and meows and then insists on sitting on my lap so it is quite difficult to type - we have just been through this and she is now ensconsed on the chair (her chair) beside me.

Skippy; you are now living in her house, so get used to it!!!!!

This cat is long dead, a stray that decided to move in. I named her Spot. There is another cat asleep at the side of the monitor. I am into flightsim, but the visibility was lousy that day.

Love your cat thread, each cat is a different character , I have had the luck in my life to work with cats of all shapes and sizes from a serval kitten which our houseboy found abandoned, to siberian tigers, and no matter which country we live in there have always been an abundance of stray cats each one more individual and extrovert than the last, our latest who we have had 12 years since arriving in australia, his name is Bastard, he rules the roost , he makes sure we all know our place , the dog is his best mate who he leads into all types of mischief, everyone should be honoured that a cat accepts them, I am just glad they can not talk, bastard is well liked in the neighbourhood, but we do have to warn new neighbours, my mate next door brings him fresh prawns when he has been fishing, when the cat see,s or hears the boat being taken out of thhe shed, he sits in the driveway till the boat returns, to annoy him my mate ignores him , the cat promptly comes home and rings the doorbell to get our attention, got many more tales but dinner is ready :o Nignoy
