The ultimate penalty for possessing a copy of "The King Never Smiles" should be to forced to read the thing entirely, cover to cover. Though it's premise is quite good (or so, they say) the book just keeps repeating itself ad nauseum. To understand the forces behind the coup, one would do much better to read this book than to read the Bangkok Post or Nation which just drum beat the militarist-Democratic Party line.
