That list could be correct!!

The official counting is done with the registered people only and NOT the really at that place living one!

For Bangkok that means the registered just 50% of the living people.

Cheers.

Also, the figure for Bangkok only includes those registered in the actual province of Krungthep, which isn't that big. All those millions living in the adjoining provinces, that would normally be thought of as a continuation of the city, are not counted. So if you live in Pinklao, you're not included in that figure.

It would be interesting if they did a real city status, like in UK.. where they count ALL people living there IE Samui, they reckon only 51,000 people, but in reality this could be 250 - 300 K at any one point.

Those figures are out of date although the relative rankings are about right. Within Chiang Mai municipality - only a portion of Chiang Mai District - there are fewer than 200,000 inhabitants, for example. Yet most people subjectively believe it is more populous because they are counting urban sprawl, which continues beyond municipal as well as district borders and into neighbouring municipalities and districts such as Mae Rim, Sankamphaeng and Hang Dong.

The same goes for all the urban centres around Thailand, people often confuse the jangwat (provincial) figures with the capital thetsaban (municpal) since they have the same names.

The last Thai gov't census was in 2000, so you need to extrapolate according to pop growth and known migration patterns. Another good source that attempts to project for the current year is World Gazetteer

I just had a look at Wiki's source for this list and it's dated 2007, from Thailand's Dept of Provincial Administration, Min of Interior. It differs from the census source I cited, so hard to say which is more correct.

Yes, I have just been searching on the web this morning and there is a lot of variation in available stats for Thai cities. It may be just terminology (e.g city versus muang district versus province, etc - I don't know)

The Dept Provincial Admin web site seems to be only in Thai so no joy there.

Look for example at the US State Dept web site:

Nakhon Ratchasima muang district 437,386

Chiang Mai muang district 247,672

If anyone manages to find a really good reliable source for these stats kindly pm me.

cheers

The Department of Provincial Administration has annual statistics down to the Tambon level, and also separating the municipal (thesaban) areas from the rural ones. For example for Nakhon Ratchasima it is at www.dopa.go.th/xstat/p5030_01.html - yet one has to do a bit of calculation as the number listed for Amphoe Mueang are only the non-municipal ones. I did some programming myself to access these statistics much easier - according to that statistics there are 429,853 in Amphoe Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima, of which the city itself (the whole Tambon Nai Mueang) has 146,201. The numbers in Wikipedia originate from these statistics, even though the one who updates them uses the real-time data, not the annual statistics.

I suppose these statistics count the number of people registered in in each area, which does not necessarily mean they also live there, so it's only an estimate, but the best one can get. The last census was done in 2000, but I am not sure how they counted there, as also in the census the population in Bangkok was much lower than one would expect. The next census will be in 2010, I hope they will find a way to overcome the systematic errors then.

Quoting other sources has one big problem if they don't list HOW they got to that numbers, if they don't use the DOPA numbers there must have been assumptions on the deviation of the DOPA number vs. reality. And I am quite sure many don't known the difference between "thesaban mueang" and "amphoe mueang", so they consider the whole district (or maybe even the whole province) as the same as the municipality. And as already mentioned the question whether the urban sprawl is included (how far?) or not.
