I applied for new WP last week and was shocked when Mr jobsworth told me it will cost me 20,000 for a year permit. Is this true? With visa, work permit and course for teachers licence thats over a months earnings before you start work. :o

There was a topic on this recently indicating that. Appears it is implemented in some provinces and will probably be at all of them sometime in the near future. So far Chiangmai hasn't received the directive and is still the old prices.

Doesn't you employer pay these fees for you?

Many of the better schools have paid 3,000 baht at renewal time, but it seems extremely unlikely that many schools would fork over 20K for WP each year, 2K for annual visa renewal, 4K to 8K for the culture course, and up to 80K for the full license. The market is quickly pricing teachers out of reach for schools, or teachers simply cannot afford to teach in Thailand. Myanmar may soon be friendlier, but the Burmese already speak better English, having been colonized.

It sounds like another clause that the teachers should insist is included in the contract, before signing.

If not it is the pupils who will loose out in the long run. :o

Yes, the pupils loose out in the short and long run :D A few bilingual schools who really want good native-speaking teachers, and the true (Western accredited) international schools, might sometimes be willing to include those costs at their expense in the contract, paying over 60K per month. Most private and governmental schools simply WILL NOT pay such expenses, leaving the teaching of subjects in English in the hands of Thais, Filipinos, Lebanese, Egyptians, Serbians, etc. It will simply drive even more native speakers to teach illegally, not pay taxes, etc.

Thai and leuk-khrung children will suffer. Families of rich Thais and rich farang never suffer. OTOH, the 20K for a work permit, and other expenses in the works, may never be made to apply. That is what I expect.

The OP says that he just applied for a WP and was told that he needed to pay the 20K.

Who is Mr jobsworth? Labor department? Agent? Attorney? I have heard that this was in the works, but thought it was not supposed to happen until later this year.
