What To Do Around Surin/prasat

hi all

im going to surin in a few days, im going to hire a car when i get there, can anyone tell me if there are any good sights or things to go and see/do, i shall be taking the g/f & kids to The Buriram Beach, if it stops raining, my g/f says it nice to go and see cambodia for a day or so,

and is there any good food/bars/clubs in surin

any help would be nice

Hope you have more luck than I had with Buriram Beach. Was closed the last 3 times I went, and that was during the school holidays. If it is going to be open then i would imagine weekends are the best bet. No telephone number or contact info available.

Phnom Rung is worth a visit. Will leave Surin area to the locals to advise on

Hi.

Khao Panom Rung is nice but I would suggest you to go to Prasat Phra Viharn. Drive from Surin to Srisaket and then drive road 221 to Prasat Phra Viharn. It´s worth the drive. The templeruins are in fact inside Cambodia on top of a threehundred meter high cliff overlooking the Cambodian lowlands. The easiest way to access it is from Thailand. Below the temple you can buy taxfree goods. Stay away from the Johnnie Walker. I don´t know what they put in the bottles. It tastes like a mix of Lao Khao and gasoline.

It´s worth the drive and the climb. Quite spectacular!

I have a place in Prasat because that is where I am planning to retire in 4 to 5 years from now. I chose there because that is where my wife is from and her family currently lives there. It is nice, quiet, and inexpensive.

However in answering your question the best thing I found to do there was to get a case (or two) of beer and watch the rice grow.....

NOTE: I am sure you can tell what my past time will be once I do retire....

Hi Gower

I live just outside Surin and would go along with the ideas of visiting the Wats mentioned at the Cambo border.

From Surin its about 45mins drive to the border(Highway214 all the way) but once you get to Chong Chom border there is really nothing to see other than a very crappy Casino that looks like it should be on the end of Eastbourne Pier. Taxi's on the Cambo side can take you on a hair raising 3 1/2 hour journey to Ankor Wat(Tomb Raider location)/ Seim Reip which is a fantastic place for a 3 day short break.

In town there are numerous Thai restaurants (plus a few ferang ones) and Kareoke bars. Just a short way out of town is Huay Senning reservior which is gr8 for fresh fish restaurants and very 'locally' styled. Speed 3 disco is load and very popular with young Thais. Personaly I think the best place is Tawan Deang Rock Club(cannot miss it, its the big red hanger next to Thong Tarin Hotel), it has a 30 (yes 30) piece Thai rock band on stage and dancing is compulsory. Drinking beer is usually involved with all the above function but that is not compulsory.

I would also recommend a visit to The Elephant village on the outskirts of town.

Assuming you are a new visitor to this area, I would safely say that at ALL the places mentioned, you will be met by friendly Thai's who are happy to meet 'Ferangs' unlike money grabbing types seen elsewhere in LOS.

Finally, The above website (Ferang Connection) is a very good source of info, as is the Fat Git that ownes the place.(local joke,sorry)

Khao Phra Wiharn is indeed an amazing site to visit. It is 300 years older than Angkor Wat and built by 5 Khmer kings over a period of 300 years started in 895.

The cliff is 640 meters above sea level, and it's actually 560 meters down to the Cambodian plain!

Btw. - don't by anything on the Cambodian side, but T- shirts. Cans of beer are ok, but the rest of the alcohol bottles are fakes, and so are the cigarettes and perfumes!

i shall need to hire a car when i get to my hotel the MAJESTIC HOTEL, my g/f lives in a village called kok tom, about 50 mins south of surin, ive only be there 3 days over xmas, this time im going for 3 weeks

can you tell me if a thai hasn't a passport they can not stay for a night in cambodia ?

she says she can only go for the day

she tells me that her and her friends go to cambodia at least 1,2,3 times a week, she says she go to look at market/etc/etc, (mmmmm ???)

I would also recommend Khao Phra Wiham from the Thai side.

Make sure you have sunscreen hat and creams it is a long walk but worth it

A year or so ago, they changed the rules where a Thai did need a pasport in order to cross over into Cambodia even for the day. I found this out when my wife, in-laws, and I were going there just for the day. They would have let me in (visa cost of course) and my wife in because she held a passport, but they would not allow her parents since all they had were Thai IDs.... So we didn't go.... Whether they have changed the law since then, which they may have when they have come to realize they were loosing money from the Thais not crossing the border anymore for their gambling trips, I don't know. It could be a possibilty.

A couple of points: 1. Sort out your hire car before you get to Surin because, with one exception, there are no Car Rental Agencies in town. The Farang Connection (sponsor for this forum) maybe able to help. 2. 'kok torn' sounds like Kap Cheong and that is about 50 mins to the south of Surin. A quiet part of the country for sure!

Good Choice. IMO, the best hotel in town(short walk to Ferang Connection and all entertainment inc Tawan Deang)

We tried a few months ago at Kap Kheong and the Thai's were refused entry without PP

This is very unusual unless she is doing a bit of buying and selling to locals. Hope she is not working in Casino. I will not say anymore on that thought.

i know she goes with about 5/6 ladys, all in the 30s/40s and she is back home in kok tom for 7/8 ish
