maimeephom
I was recently in Phayo, and i was very impressed by a large lakeside wooden villa. It is in French colonial style, similar to those found in Laos. I think some preservation work has been done on it. does anybody know the history of it? mmp
Sparkles
I was in Phayao last week too and maybe we saw the same place. Its on the Travelfish web site as the old Teak Mansion. While we were there there was nobody about the property and nobody we asked in the near vicinity seemed to know anything about it. It certainly is a magnificent structure. I am sure someone will come forward with the information.
sceadugenga
From HERE Strolling around Kwan Phayao, don’t be surprised if you spot a mammoth structure built of golden teak partially obscured by a huge banyan tree and restaurants around it. It is the Suthaphakti Mansion built during King Rama V’s reign. We stumbled upon it by chance while walking back after the boat ride. Closed to the public, visitors can only admire its splendid architecture from a distance. We were lucky to get a closer glimpse of this colonial-style mansion of the late Luang Srinakra Nukul, thanks to the owner of a sidewalk restaurant who also doubles as its caretaker. He took us on a tour of the mansion where members of the royalty and government dignitaries have spent nights when travelling to Phayao, which is not surprising at all as in those days the province, dominated by mountains and paddy fields, has few guesthouses or hotels of note for tourists. Built on a nine rai plot, the mansion or the main structure has two support buildings that stand independently. Their interior, still in good condition, boasts Western and Chinese architectural influences. Although signs of wear and tear could be spotted here and there, overall the mansion was still in good condition.
