Oh dear, another genius who thinks he sets the standards for what is and what isn't teaching. I teach English in Thailand, and I'm proud of it. I also have a degree and a PGCE and consider myself a real teacher. I may not get the big bucks, but I enjoy my job, and I enjoy working with my students.

Don't get defensive now. I think the guy is looking for a decent job with decent pay and recommending he become a real teacher only to come out here and teach English (ESL) for not big bucks but the enjoyment of his students as a career path would be pretty dumb.

I may be wrong on the engineering side but I have a few (4-5) good friends who are under 28 working in good job here (and region) in O&G engineering and geology so I was going on that. Clearly they don't have 10 years of good experience......

Real teachers who get on the international school ciruit. Lets see. I have a few good mates that are teachers. Lets look at their records (and this is just a sample of 3):

1. went from home country to Scotland to Thailand. Planning for South Amercica next

2. home country to Monaco, then Thailand, now in HK

3. home country to Botswana, then Thailand, now in Prague

Show me another job where you can relatively easily have such a wide choice of countries to work in when you are under 35....

Show me another job where you can relatively easily have such a wide choice of countries to work in when you are under 35....

I tend to agree on the teaching and mobility at an early age while not being in the top quartile of your profession - good guy's in many jobs get their pick as the company wants to give them the experience in various markets and/or they want to keep them - cultural fit is also important too though and I know some are blocked from here because the Asians do not like them ;-)

As for O&G - there may be two segments of the market here. The engineer who has worked his way up getting various qual's along the way with his experience and the specialised grads/post-grads who they need around the world in each place.

Clearly...there will be youngsters working the the O&G game, but even at 28, they would be considered babies in the game, we all had to start somewhere, I am considered an old b*st*rd in the O&G game now and realise how little I knew about the job I was doing at 28 years of age.... but think about it... say 4 years at Uni - say 21/22 out of studies..and 5-6 years of experience....its not a fast track to a job in Thailand....even the example you give the person has invested basically 10 years already..studies + experience into a job they are doing...

You dont mention whether the individuals you are talking about are farang or Thai, If farang where they transferrred to Thailand inside the company they are working for from their home countries ?...if yes...a lot of companies do this to get staff members experience..

Not in that industry etc but from what I see around and guys I know tend to agree

There are those guy's "In Company" though who are being rotated for experience and getting groomed for more senior positions are there not at a younger age - ie out of Uni, 2 years close to home then off on rotation?

Learn programming and you can get a job anywhere in the world. Or, finance. China is where the money's at these days, though. Go to Shanghai. I've heard it's the new New York. There are jobs for the enterprising with some education in such a place. Not easy, but doable if you're very determined. Go get a bachelor's and then a master's and you should find something.

Not disagreeing with you, just saying that these guys have OS posting at an early age. I know some who got job OS almost straight out of uni.

I am obviously talking about farang and its a little half and half. Couple transfered with company and yes one is on a 2 year new country rotation policy, others applied for jobs here from home country or were recruited in home country for jobs here and were relocated. One has headed on to Aberdeen and now Kazakh. All with different companies, just applying for the jobs going. He's about 27.

Fair enough but this guy just wants a job and career in Thailand! I think a full expat deal would be out of his dreams.

So you have never been to Shanghai but reckon somebody who knows IT will be able to roll up and get a job - what are you smoking?

Well I am an expat Regional IT Manager for a major MNC - let me into something - our programmers where we need them are local or its offshord and most are the same - we rarely send developers oversea's.

Now while I think my company is typical there will be jobs available but in pretty specialist area's such as SAP and Banking etc but ven then its all Indians who I know are in the jobs - cheaper and better

Now if someone was a good prgrammer and he could get his own work then yes you could set up shp and do some freelancing anywhere.

This is not the same as become a good programmer and you can get a job anywhere.

This is my view of the corporate IT world i am in others experiences may vary but I am in Asia and I does wot I does

If your working offshore and are looking to live in Thailand on your time off it doesnt really matter where you are, it just means youve a more expensive flight and extra hours travelling. From what i gather theres plenty of work in the Middle East which is only a 5 hour flight away.

heres your sure fire solution

go work for one of the big global mining companies

they are taking anyone at present - cant get enough people

work remote for a few years and save a bundle

then invest those savings in said global miners shares

semi retire to whatever 3rd world country you like

live off your tax paid dividends and share capital gains

The fact is that it's easier to get work in other Asian countires where the economy is more mature and the visa restrictions aren't so restrictive.

Finding a niche is key and yes you will have to pay your dues if you want a company to transfer you to the East. I don't have a degree but have finally made it to HK at 32 with no small amount of luck and a lot of hard work. This kind of opportunity doesn't really present itself to you when you are younger because as other posters have pointed out, a company usually sends you to gain experience and also impart some of your knowlege onto the locals.

A bit of a cliche but it's a marathon not a sprint. I'm still young enough to enjoy the expat package, so get yourself in a MNC, work hard and put your hand up when ever there are travel opportunities. I had to take the rough with the smooth being posted to Frankfurt and Houston, apologies if any other TV members are from those places, but not the most glamourous parts of the world. Then when there's an opportunity in a place you like, tell them otherwise they won't know what you want.

Logistics is another option to look at as there are many non-Thai's working in this field in Thailand.

You still need experience but the chances are there.

For an income anywhere in the world, be very very good at something nobody else can do.

IT, teaching, engineering..... many very good professionals abound.

Start by drug trafficking. Then you most probably would be court and thrown in jail where you can slowly wright a book and make a few baht. At the very least you will be living here full time.

getting a tefl and teaching english is about the only job youll get at a young age out in thailand.

it wont be great money, maybe start saving some money till you hit around 2-3,000 gbp and then head out.
