stopped by the police on the outside corner of the moat between CM gate and SD gate on wednesday in one of their end of the month pay day crackdowns.

fined 3000 baht for not having registration. (they tried to charge me 10,000 at first).

anyone know how much it would cost to get it registered? It's a 200cc suzuki.

Everyone I ask either doesn't know, or is just having a stab in the dark.

We run a local locksmithing business and the cops are amongst our best customers. I asked one if he could make me a legal plate some time ago. He came back and told me "no problem, everything legal with a book and plate for 80 thousand baht" ! I promptly sold the bike and bought a new CBR 150 for 67 thousand baht. You might try going to the motor registry near the runway on the Hangdong Road. They are very friendly - if you are not a good Thai speaker, take a Thai with you. Don't forget the earplugs - all aircraft taking off and landing from the south only clear the place by about 2 hundred feet. Good luck !

The reason I ask is because I have friends that have been riding unregistered BIG bikes (I'm talking >1000 cc here) around Chiang Mai for YEARS without getting fined. Just was wondering what error you may have committed to draw their attention to your missing registration.

Infraction - riding an unregistered illegal bike at a police checkpoint?

Since the beginning of April 2008 the police in Chiang Mai have been stopping riders of big bikes & checking for rego. The asking fine is 10,000 baht. Take a look around Cnx & you dont see as many big bikes on the road. All the rental shops have had customers nabbed at different times & have come to amicable arrangements. I've had several mates - farang & Thai - stung; & it would appear as if this going to be an ongoing campaign - easy money & perhaps the legal big importers have complained in Bkk. A clear sign of the times & the future I reckon.

It was a check point. they were pulling everyone over and checking.

I too have many friends who have been riding unregistered bikes around chiang mai for years without any hassles (as long as they wear a helmet), which was one of the reasons I wasn't too worried about buying an unregistered bike in the first place.

A thai student of mine was pulled over the day before and fined 2000 for not wearing a helmet. I had no idea it was that much! I thought it was more like 200.

maybe i'll need to get a runaround dream for the last week of the month!

Stopped me for not wearing a helmet..I do now.

During my brief stay at the police station with all the other hardend criminals and legal naysayers, the police brought in several cases of Chang..and carried it through the crowed room for us all to see..

I had to wait because they couldn't find my license for 20 minutes and then when they found it, gave it to another farang guy in line...

I guess we all look alike ( except the other guy was about 4 feet taller and 300 pounds heavier )

It's quite a price hike from 200 - 2000! Guess the rising price of oil is really affecting the cops eh?!

1000 baht you say, that's music to my ears. over in the 'bikes in thailand' section guys are saying they paid 25K+ for registering bikes in Phuket. However, another seemingly very knowledgeable fellow is saying anything under 250cc is only 600 baht.

Could you give me more info on where/how you registered your bike? The papers you had etc...

What happened was... I was stopped and after they asked to see my book, they handed me the slip of paper, told me to leave my bike there and go to the station to pay the fine. wasn't too keen on this idea, and eventually one of them agreed to escort me the station. I went inside and when I gave the slip of paper to one of the officers, he said 10,000 baht. The rest of them burst out laughing, and I thought he was just joking. Then he looked deadly serious and repeated 10,000 baht. He pointed to a sign on the desk, written in thai, that had 10,000 in amongst it all. I tried to buy myself some time by asking him some questions about getting the bike registered. He sent me to talk to the officer who could speak English well. I told him that 10K seemed too expensive, and after a while he said that was the maximum fine. I asked what the minimum was and he said 2K. I asked him if he could make it 2, he asked the cop and the cop said 3 was ok. I only had 2 on me, so had to be taken to the ATM by the cop, when he started trying to get all chatty with me, where you from, how long you live in thailand, etc...

then I had to try and maneuver my bike out the tightly packed pen they had stuffed it into for reasons that elude me.

this whole shenanigans was followed by a 4 hour wait at immigration, just to get a 30 day extension. I cannot believe in this day and age they are still handwriting visa information into huge log books at the immigration office. incredible.

Wasn't my best day.

Ok...did you get a registration book when you bought the bike?

If you did...the seller should have given you a form to fill out to change the name to your name..kao jai?

The you take the bike to where you got your thai drivers license, next to the airport...there the officals, ( givin um some leway here... ) check the VIN numbers on the engine and compare to the registration book...if they are the same, you're good to go...pay the registration change there.

Simple, simple.

If the bike was purchased "illegal", i.e., no registration book...hummm...yep, that's gunna cost ya...and I cannot tell ya what. ( Some $$$$ I'm sure...) If no book, I'd go see the person you bought it from..

I don't know know of the under 250cc rule, my Vespa is around 190 cc ( oh s'cuse me...someone earlier accused me of not being able to use english..lucky I don't type in ebonics..A'merikan, ya know ) and it was 1000Bt to register it.

This was in early March. Like the wind...things change here..TIT.
