IrishGal Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Hi All, I was in China last July and I was bitten alive. For some reason insects seem to love me. Are insects usually a problem in Samui in July? Do you find any particular creams etc good? Cheers.

jeztennis Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Apparently mosquitos don't like vitamin B which is found in Marmite, but depends whether you 'Love it or Hate it"
pumpuiman Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Any mosquito repellent which contains "DEET" is extremely effective, and recommended by most travel guides.
Samuian Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 (edited) What bugs? Everything else has been responded to.. In China, especially public -overnight-sleeper-transportation is known to be "bed-bug" infested! Don't have that problem here! Edited June 5, 2008 by Samuian
IrishGal Posted June 5, 2008 Author Posted June 5, 2008 Thanks I might look into a Vit B supplement so. I don't know what bugs were biting me in China but anytime I went out for dinner/beer in the evening I got bitten. They swelled up and looked like big red lumps. Each swelling was red and about 2.5 inches in diameter and had a little white "head". They were seriously itchy!

In a bright orange can and is readily available on Samui. It contains about 15% Deet. Gin and Tonic with a slice of lemon also seems to put the critters off, although not sure how much Vit B is in the lemon slice.
RedneckHippie Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Try Neem oil mixed with some water and spray it on like insect repellent. It works wonders, especially against mosquitos. You guys should do some research before putting crud like DEET on your skin, not very smart....

Is this why I have started to talk loudly with an American accent?
NALAK Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 (edited) bring some autan with you boots and many chemist sell it. once you get here buy a spray or cream call OFF, same company and same product contains DEET. if you are prone to getting bitten you will get bitten here. been here 6 years and off works fine. i would also buy some insect spray here and spray your room when you go out at night to kill off any mozzies in your room. still on the bright side those big red lumps will scare off the sleazy guys you mentioned in previous post www.autan.co.uk Edited June 5, 2008 by NALAK
suegha Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 My wife has a similar problem (I don't get bitten at all!) and she swears by 'Citronella'(sp). Has to apply it all day long and even more in the evenings.

Is this why I have started to talk loudly with an American accent? Perhaps, used over long periods of time DEET can cause brain damage and seizures. Not to mention that even trace amounts of DEET getting into the ecosystem sets things off balance and poisons the ground water. I'm astonished at the amount of people so gung-ho about it, do you guys just not know of the negative properties of insecticides or something? I wish I had not named myself RedneckHippie since you guys will just think this is just hippie rhetoric, unfortunately for all of us its not - just a sad truth - try google.com Neem oil is just extracted from the neem trees seeds and works even more effectively I believe, it's been used for thousands of years as a natural pesticide. IrishGal Posted June 6, 2008 Author Posted June 6, 2008 still on the bright side those big red lumps will scare off the sleazy guys you mentioned in previous postwww.autan.co.uk No, no, no - I am irresistible to all insects and men alike. Wait until I hit Samui!
NALAK Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 I wish I had not named myself RedneckHippie since you guys will just think this is just hippie rhetoric, correct, even weed is sprayed to kill the bugs most of what you eat will have been treated with insectacide at some stage,
BusyBee123 Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 'I'm astonished at the amount of people so gung-ho about it, do you guys just not know of the negative properties of insecticides or something?' it's the only thing that has worked 100% for me and i'd rather avoid dengue fever than worry about insecticide for 2 weeks
