June 13, 200818 yr Immigration opened a new passport control counter located at the long-tail pier in Ranong about 2 months ago. The border run process at Ranong is thus now a little quicker, because you no longer need to go to the Thai immigration building on the main road. You can just park at the gas/petrol station, walk straight through to the border post (which is by the river front on the right of the actual pier) then catch a long tail direct to Burma. On the way back, you get stamped in at the pier border post and you are done. Burmese Immigration are currently also insisting that you provide them with a photocopy of the ID page from your passport along with the required ten dollar's worth of bills which must, as before be in PRISTINE/BRAND NEW condition.

June 14, 200818 yr Author Better take dollars, Burmese Customs do not give a good exchange rate - that's why they insist on uncirculated notes, if they turn down your dollar notes then they can make a 'killing'. I have stood there on one occasion while they rejected more than eight notes before they found an 'acceptable' set (my bills were all given to me as tips by American guests). I seem to remember on that occasion they were asking for 500 THB and it's possible that they wouldn't have any change, if say you only had a 1,000 THB note.
