If you were here on an extension of stay you were grandfather ed and have only had to meet the requirements in place at that time (there were different requirements by age) as long as extensions continued without interruption.

That is true but they do seem to be giving consideration to those who can not meet the new requirements so nobody should give up without trying if their only problem is a lack of meeting the new money requirements.
