Red License Plates

Featured Replies

Just bought my first car here. As I understand it the red license plates are temporary plates untill registratio is completed and permanent plates are ready.

Now what are my restrictions with those plates? It is said to me cant get out of the province and cant drive as soon as sun goes down??

Advise appreciated

THat is the general rule, I have had red plates on 4 different cars over the last 5 year, been everywhere with them. outside the province, driving at nighttime...

There is a rule stating that you can not drive after dark or between cities, but hey, the registration takes 90 days and what are you supposed to do?? I do not live in Bangkok and I have never driven a car with red plates there but I assume that they are stricter over there than out in the province...

Be carefull, ps make sure you get your 3000B back for the red plates... The shop gets it back but they rarely give it to you... GET YOUR MONEY BACK...

They're what we in the Uk know as trade plates and shouldn't be used by the new owner. They're for demo and test drive purposes only. However, people are too impatient to wait for registration, so they 'borrow' these trade plates from the dealer. We paid 2,000B deposit and got our white plates (and our cash back) in about three or four weeks.

They look good, and let everyone know you have a new car.

You shouldn't drive at night and can get a ticket. It's never happened to us, but has to a friend.

Our neighbours have had red ones on since Christmas, a Benz in Central Pinklao for maybe a year!

I wanted to get legal white ones asap.

I think that you might find that if you want to drive out of the province then the dealer has to sign the book for the trip..but hey we had our red plates for a couple of months..went everywhere and never got pulled up..luck of the draw I guess.

I have driven all over Thailand in my vehicles with red plates - including Bangers (lived there for 4 yrs) .. also at night. I also drove for 4 months without a front plate after losing it in a deep river off road (obtained a police report from a cop shop in Nan Province just in case).

Never once even got a second look from the BIB either in Bkk or upcountry, even at Police Check Points just got a smart salute and a wave through! But then again I look like a repectable gentleman :D:o
