The only way to do this is to go to the U.S., rent a place and install DirecTV in your apartment. Get an HD package. Connect a slingbox to your satellite setup there and then you'll be able to access games in HD via the internet and hook it up to your HD tv at your place in Thailand. Not sure if the HD will transfer through the software, but it might.

Otherwise, you're just stuck with Truevisions, which actually has channels that show a fair amount of NFL but only one NBA game a week. I don't think they have HD yet. Or, there are some other satellite options but are technically illegal but many have them.

As for a slingbox streaming Hidef.. Kinda ambitious bandwidth expectations.. I would say there two hopes etc (but youve all heard it).

What Jimjim describes works perfect and is the way I do it. But NO hdtv on the current generation of Slingboxes (some have a HD input, but the maximum resolution they can stream is 640x480, only if you have a decent upload in the US and a good download over here - hmmm....) Normally, they will release a HD version later this year, but with the current internet speeds in Thailand, don't even think to buy one

The slingbox is a good tool and I'm very happy to have one, but don't expect too much from it, let's say the image I see is like cable tv on a 10 years old TV set.

I paid extra to have 4 Mb True Broadband installed into my apartment where you can get wireless broadband for free - my aim was to connect to a Slingbox in the UK. In practice it's not really any faster than the free WIFi service and not fast enough for smooth viewing from a Slingbox - so it was a waste of time and money.

Thats the problem.. One mans 'very clear picture' is anothers muddy low res net stream.

I just wait a day and DL the Hidef torrents.. Rarely are they clear hidef tho, some of the 1080p BluRay rips do look good, those are worth the wait.

I just wait a day and DL the Hidef torrents.. Rarely are they clear hidef tho, some of the 1080p BluRay rips do look good, those are worth the wait.

The slingbox is NOT a HiDef device ! The maximum resolution it can stream is 640x480, and only if you have a reasonable bandwith. This is OK to watch TV a comfortable way, but I have to admit, if I want to see a movie, I mostly prefer the torrent too

It's power is that when I turn it on, I have exactly the same viewing experience as my friend who is hosting my box 10.000 kms away. In an hour or so, I will watch the "Tour de France" in my own language - would be impossible without Slingbox

Used to work in the business - you need probably a minimum of 8 Mbit/s and more likely 12 -> 15 Mbit/s raw bandwidth to pass a presentable, albeit highly compressed HDTV signal. Downloads are pretty slow, but certainly possible. The OP needs someone to record and transfer over the bitstreams in non real time for later viewing.

Fast action sport like the NBA is often even much more demanding on bandwidth than most movies.

The native bandwidth of a SMPTE 292M 1920 x 1080i HDTV signal is 1.485 GBit/s.

So HDTV streaming over the internet is a way off yet, downloads are here already.
