Doing Visa Run To Mae Sai. Anything Good To Buy

Recommended Posts

I am going to Mae Sai by bicycle to do a visa run in a couple of days. The last 2 times, I didn't bring much back except a bag of yummy roasted fava (?) beans. Is there anything small worth buying that is a real bargain either in Mae Sai or over the border. I am talking about saving at least 30% off of CM prices. How about a bottle of hard liquor? good ear buds for my mp3 player? Not interested in DVDs or viagra (real or fake) :o

Thought, I'd ask the longtime runners.

Yeh the imported spirits are quite a bit cheaper, like 30% or so. I use to buy the Absolute Vodka 700ml ~380 baht, Kahlua 1 litre ~ 650 baht, Johnny walker Black label 1litre 750b, 1litre red label 450b. But go to the cheaper bottle shop, at the bottom of of the stairs, turn left, walk up until you hit the big road, turn right into the small soi thats at the intersection on the big road and the soi ur walking on, and its on the right hand side about 50 meters down. They sell lots of wine too, all prices are marked.

I might consider buying only one bottle as I am on a bicycle and would be concerned about the glass breaking.

Thanks Artey, that's a new one on me, I'll check it out next month.

I've found the Duty Free shop opposite immigration interesting as well, they have a wide variety of booze that varies regularly. I got a bottle of The MacAllan last time.

The electronic media that shall not be mentioned is at a record low of 40B a disk.

I just realized, I could use 40 or 50 blank DVDs. Is it worth getting them either at Mae Sai or Burma or will I return home to find they are worthless rejects or worse, full of crawly things like worms and viruses :o.

I've never been stopped and searched in what must be 50 crossings now.

Keep it within reason though and don't buy the "porno" DVDs off the touts, a sure recipe for disaster.

What you afraid of a little rain for 10 to 20 minutes?

If you read my post more carefully , I was just inquiring for something small that wouldn't take much room that was a real bargain like ear buds or blank DVDs.

Blank DVD's from mae sai, I wouldn't trust. Opticals like binoculars, boxed sets of tv series are usually a good buy and if you know gems, they are small and cheap there, but beware of fakes.......

Have a good safe trip and don't forget your raincoat and plastic bags to carry your stuff.

Thanks. That's why I asked about the DVDs and such. As we all know, a great bargain many times, is just money thrown away.

I have to confess that I will be riding my bicycle on trainers inside a environmentally protected truck. :o.

I may kick myself in the a$$ if it turns out to rain a lot. The good news is, at least I'll have a good Thai friend to keep me company in my possible wet misery. :D

I can't answer your question, but I think it's really cool that you are riding your bicycle there. Go for it!

Thanks.

I do hope the weather will be reasonable, like raining while we stop for lunch or at 3AM in morning or someplace else. :o
