Tier 1 of points based system to be introduced 30 June 2008 - Biggest shake up to UK immigration system in 40 years (16/06/2008)

The UK government today announced the introduction of a new system for assessing highly skilled migrants wanting to come to the UK to work. Tier 1 of the new Australian style points based system (PBS) will come into effect on 30 June.

The points system means only those migrants Britain needs can come to the UK. Tier 1 builds upon the success of the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme and is aimed at attracting applicants who have the very highest skills or who wish to establish themselves in business or to invest in the UK. Further tiers relating to students, workers with a job offer and temporary workers will be rolled out over the next 12 months.

The new system is far easier for applicants to use. They will earn points for their qualifications, previous earnings, competence in English language and ability to support themselves and their dependents. They can calculate, before they make their application, whether their points add up to entry as a highly skilled worker. The system is also more straightforward, what was a two-stage application process now has only one stage - and the initial visa will be granted for three years not two.

Border and Immigration Minister Liam Byrne said:

“The UK is a fantastic place to work and develop for those with the skills we need. A points system has worked well in Australia and I think it will work well for Britain. This is a key part of the huge shake-up to our border security this year.”

The introduction of PBS follows a tightening of British border security arrangements. All visa applicants now have to submit their fingerprints for checking against government databases before visas are approved, severe penalties have been introduced for employers of illegal workers in the UK and a new unified Border force has been established. In addition, since 1 April, applicants who use false documents or deception when making a visa application will face a ban from the UK of up to ten years.

I am not sure but I think that this only applies to people who are NOT members of the European Union.

I believe that peoples from the EU are allowed into any other EU country without let or hindrance.

However if your wife is Thai then it is very difficult for her to get into the UK.

If she applies for a Migrant worker visa it quite likley will be!

If however she applies for a spouse visa the migrant worker changes will not apply to her.

Thats not to say that spouse visa criteria will not be reviewed, indeed it appears that all visa requirements are being reviewed over the coming 12 months.

Exactly. I cannot go anywhere without Rumanian beggars selling the big issue and chasing me for money. A nice addition to our economy that, isn't it. :o

The Country's finished. They are blaming Asians for the breakdown in our society.

The Irish are smart enough to know who the real culprits are. When will we get a vote about Europe?

I'd assumed it to be the case, due in part to the previous 40+years of inadequate immigration regulation :o , however the "Recent UK Settlement Visa" thread seems to contradict this ?

I feel your pain.

Why don't put these Eastern Europeans to work - to make a living, not begging.

In the US, you would find these E/EU immigrants ( both legals and illegals) working in tourist cities like Las Vegas, NY etc. You eat in the restaurants served by them, riding a taxi driven by them, shop at the retail stores waited by them, they are everywhere. At least it is easy to communicate with them since some start picking up their English on their job, right away most make an effort to learn the language of their new host country- USA.

All the Eastern Europeans I've met in the UK in the past 6 months have been gainfully employed, doing the jobs the indigenous population think beneath them. Norfolk and Lincolnshire would be festering square miles of unpicked crops without the Eastern Europeans that you disparage.

Agreed some are very good workers, but I think you have missed the point the other poster was making, he was refering to the beggars and the big issue sellers rather than those gainfully employed.

Perhaps if the supermarkets paid some of their extortionate profits to their suppliers rather than keeping 400%+ profits on some farm produce then perhaps the farmers/ processing plants could pay a decent wage that would attract local workers?
