koheesti Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 OK, this is the elephant in the room everyone tries to ignore. Sure, Samui has plenty of well publicised (at least here on this forum) problems such as poor infrastructure, dirty beaches and crooked taxi drivers. But what about the farangs who come here to hide from the law in their own country? It's not always easy to know who is who. How well do you REALLY KNOW the friends you have made here? I hear there is even one guy on this island that apparently is so afraid of his own shadow that he pisses himself when he sees the tourist police. I mean, that guy must REALLY be hiding some terrible, dark secret to so on edge. And I guess being so afraid might mean he is harmless. Still, I can avoid the garbage on the beach or the taxi drivers. But there is nothing standing between the peace-loving residents of Samui and these hidden crazy fugitives who at anytime might snap. Me, I'll be more careful from now on whether I'm relaxing on the beach, having a drink with friends, or even shopping at Big C. You just never know.
angiud Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 Speaking about Koh Phangan, I personally know 4 or 5 falangs living here that run away from the law. And actually they break the law on KPG as well...
Samuian Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 I am afraid that there are more local "Fugitives" around then "imported" ones... or do you mean the "Fugees"? Ah' well or are they the ones comin' in by night on the shimmering green lights....from behind the sunset zone?

I agree, the resident population is full of "undesirables" (just watch the news!...and, like an iceberg, most of them remain below the surface..until you run into them)...both foreign AND Thai, unfortunately

Have to hand it to you koohesti, i do like your style!! But yeah, to answer the topic i think there probably is some people hiding from the law back home among the people over here. And i do agree that alot of the "friends" over here i dont know the history of. I suppose it never hurts to be a little careful.

You just never know. i not care if there are fugatives on the island. i just piss myself laughing when i see forang tourist police. remeber most fugatives are quiet here because they do not want to draw attension to themselves. i hope this isn;t a suttle directed at the BigC because alot of boxing happens round BigC. we will have to wait and C what happens. i do know thatBig C is not responable for the safety of people once they are outside there shop. anything can happen. be carefull
frankman Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 (edited) There are good apple and bad apple, EVRYWHERE on this planet. Be carefull with selecting your friends, esspecially in Bangkok, Pattaya, and where they might be. Samui and KPG are relativ safe. But yes, better Tesco comes first to KPG than Big C. Agreed. koheesti Posted June 27, 2008 Author Posted June 27, 2008 There are good apple and bad apple, EVRYWHERE on this planet. The topic isn't "are there bad people around the world". We know they are. The topic - like this forum - is about Samui KPG (& KT) and the bad apples (crooks and crazies) that may hide from the authorities there. No offense intended frankman - you're a good forum member in my book - I just hate the "excuse" for a problem that it happens other places too.

Not required by my company - however for my own piece of mind and the company supports me on this.) When I have asked for a police report from their country of origin as well as certificates/diplomas - a few have not returned for interview....) On a different note, even in the social circles here - agreed, can't be to sure of who is really who.. As mentioned above - don't live a life of being paranoid, but use the common sense given to you. Obviously being here long enough (or anywhere) can give you the time to get to know someone as a true friend (not always though).
bratpack Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 If you dont know what is the problem. Some of my good friends in Pattaya are charming, intelligent, great fathers and husbands, and would help you out in a crisis. They would fit into the op mould though even looking at their attributes,i would be far happier for them to be friends then enemies.

Have to agree with you on that one Bratpack - I have a few acquaintances here in KS that I prefer to keep in that category - vs - an enemy.
bratpack Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Got to be street wise in certain parts of Thailand classic cigar
bunkerwalla Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Got to be street wise in certain parts of Thailand classic cigar I Can´t see the problem myself. I often go out for a drink with my doddgy pals and it is great fun to watch them try to drink through their SAS Balaclavas and how we laugh when we all do a runner at the end!

How well do you REALLY KNOW the friends you have made here? .The answer is: you don't. In all the years I have been coming to Samui (and rest of Thailand) I never met someone with a sticker on his forehead: "I'm a fugitive" Did you ? LaoPo

LaoPo who cares who is a fugative. if you get on with them as long as the are not wanted for sex crimes then it is nones business apart from the poeple who are trying to catch them
BigC Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Why sex crimes and not robbery, or homicide??? because ersonally i don;t care about robbery or homicide as long as they don't do it here or around me. as long as i get on with the person then it is none of my business what they do before they come to thailand. i am not going to interview all my mates and question them about there past. Sex crimes are bad though. that is where i draw the line.
ham Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Why sex crimes and not robbery, or homicide??? if the gab between rich and poor getting so diverted, robbery's are one of the answers. Not that I think this is good, just it is like that and that is good. The real "fugitives" wearing neck ties, driving big cars, steeling money everywhere they can, legally and on purpose. Never getting enough. You name it, Just look at the micro-cosmos here! 4'000 Baht a month if they are lucky, working like slaves or bondsmen. why should the rich live in peace and without fear? The big brother they implementing all over the planet will never help. Why should somebody care about fugetives here? Sorry for those with this painfull experience! It should not happen, because there could be enough for everyone. ham
frankman Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Totally agreed, ham. So build your walls higher for the rich but even from us and we live in a bungalow since 2000, they broke in and stole the little we have.
koheesti Posted June 29, 2008 Author Posted June 29, 2008 When I have asked for a police report from their country of origin as well as certificates/diplomas - a few have not returned for interview....) Is the job being offered worth going through all the hassle of getting those documents? I wouldn't even know how to go about getting a police report from my country of origin. And since I've only lived there 16 months out of the past 14+ years, I'm not sure it would do any good.
