Rumour some of the European Airlines are reducing baggage from 20 to 18 kgs on international routes ,and/or operating a piece system.

Has this story any validity ,if so when does it start ?

Only heard rumours, but it's only a matter of time before all airlines take a serious look at baggage limitations. Airfares are reaching astronomic proportions with the increases in fuel costs, so they will have to look elsewhere for cost savings. :o

Why don't they just put up ticket prices? It's not unreasonable to pass additional costs on to the customer..

Isn't raising airfares a means of passing costs onto consumers? In a way I agree with this system. Those who travel with bags and bags should pay more than those who travel with very little IMO.

In case you didn't notice the press lately, there are substantial fare increases scheduled for next month in a lot of major airlines.

I just bought and paid for two round trip international fares, saving me around $650 on next month's fares.

If they increase any more, passenger volume will decline, so the only other way to cut fuel costs, is to limit baggage, logical really.

Unlikely because they will be sued, and they will lose. This was tried before, twas a NO GO, and cost them more dosh then what they tried to save!!! :o

In theory, any mode of transport could do that as the amount of energy required to move a body goes up with the weight of the body.. How long before Bangkok taxi drivers size you up before insisting on an additional fare?

Considering it's perfectly normal for people to be larger than others, for reasons other than overindulgence, I can see that being grounds for a discrimination complaint..

I can see a benefit in chargeing less for checking in no bags etc, but little tweaks, eg 20kg down to 18kg etc just confuse and aggravate the situation at the airport. Maybe they should make it so the cheapest booking class get's zero baggage allowance.

EU airliners fall under EU law, means: cannot be changed overnight, whatever is mentioned on your ticket confirmation.

So, a lugguage allowance of 20 kg means; TWENTY KG, and NOT 19 or ..., But also NOT 21 kg !

That till quite recently till ... 25 or even 29 kg a blind eye was turned .. could be history . I travel a LOT from Amsterdam to Bangkok, and NEVER a problem till... 14 May ex Suvarnabhumi with China Air: 27 kg, and .. I had to take out all above 21 kg. Also for my hand lugguage. NEVER heard of " overweight extra charge". So, throw away. Probably she had a Thai training, so 10 minutes long, before to function in this job.

Last 18 June the same with LTU ex Duesseldorf - Germany to Bangkok: for me, with 22,8 kg: no problem, but a collegue with 25,5 kg had to pay overweight charge: 5 kg x Euro 10 = Euro 50 + same for his hand lugguage all excess of 6 kg

Here they knew the words of " overweight extra pay "

As all airliners face dramatic extra fuel costs, all will try everything to gain more money, without raising their ticket prices seen high competition.

For Thai Airlines and other Asian i cannot say anything, as here not so strange, when you awake next morning and a rule / law is changed, so your contract ( here: = air ticket) becomes different

indeed all airlines doing this now. same goes for the middle-eastern-gang such as Emirates, Gulf, Qatar. everything over 21 Kg is a "no-no".

Emirates is extremely nasty these days..... announced a record profit for 2007 lately, but their greedyness obviously doesnt have any limits....

so better fly THAI, apply for membership in their FF-program "Royal orchid Plus", and already after earning 10.000 Miles (thats just one intercontinetal return-trip) u will be silver member and get an additional 10 Kg allowance. though, their cheapo-tourist-booking classes (V,W) do not earn miles anymore, starting 1st of July.

One interesting point is that some airlines like Gulf and Oman give you the extra 10kg just for registering in their FF programmes. The details of your proposed airline's programme may be worth checking in advance if weight is a likely issue.
