I am looking for an external 1 TB HDD. Which brand do you recommend?

Another important question; should I partition it or leave it as it is?

Dont know which is best , but i saw a 1tb western digital in Tuk.com Pattaya think they were asking 9k baht for it.........also had a 1.5tb version.

Would you not be better with 2x 500gb drives?...........just thinking if it breaks down you/ll only lose half your data...........also price wise a 500gb western digital elements was 3900 baht

so 2 would work out cheaper than the 1tb.

I have 3 x 500gb western digital and 3 x 500gb Freecom drives all work fine..........the advantage the freecom has is an on/off switch on the back so need for plugging ang unplugging the drive.

Freecom were bought in the UK though so dont know if they have them here............cost 60 pound

The WD also comes equipped with an undersized cache, half the size or less of the others. Needless to say, WD performance is terrible. These drives were never intended for the consumer market. If you do buy WD, just make be careful not to get a so called "5400 to 7200" drive. Samsung seems to be the technological leader at present as they only need 3 platters where the others use 4-5.

I am also looking for a large external hard drive, right now reading about it I am leaning towards Buffalo, check www.jib.co.th for pricing they seem to make some innovative products and it is a Japanese company.

That is a PC World review, not WD specs. But it is worth noting though that WD has announced a "real" 1TB drive that operates at a full and constant 7200RPM and has a 32MB cache. It's known as the black edition drive and is on par with 1TB drives from the other manufacturers. So given the choice, I'd stay way from the current WD stuff as it is not necessarily the cheapest and is certainly going to be the slowest. Samsung seems to be the cheapest right now if you can find it.

This one seems to be having decent reviews if you want to go large. Available in Panthip.

I use a Seagate 750gb drive. Cost about 6,000bt at Pantip. The 1tb version was not released when I bought it. No problems in the last year and it has a 5 year warranty. Speed seems ok but faster would be better.

If you're looking for a NAS, then consider a Synology. I was unable to find the latest models in Thailand, so had one shipped from a US ebay seller. Very pleased with price, delivery and performance.

You can get > 50MB/s on a normal drive these days, and about 10MB/s over the USB bus. Some USB devices seem to be better than others but I have never seen it go over 20MB/s, well below what a 1TB drive can deliver. So the drive may be fast, but the bus would be a huge bottleneck. Avoid USB.

on my motherboard (ASUS P5NSLI) I only have SATA connections. Possible to connect internal SATA to external eSATA with an adapter?
