Windows Live Mail - Emails With Photos Attached Often Not Delivered.

Recommended Posts

Posted

I used to attach photos using the photo attachment facility in Hotmail, and never had any problems with them them delivered to my recipients. One of my friends in England still uses dial up and he always received the pics.

Since I have been using Windows Live Mail, he doesn't receive anything , and I have had several instances of my emails not being recieved from other people who have broadband connections when I have attached photographs. One of these was a company where I prveiously sent pics with no problems.

I also do not receive any notifications of failure to deliver, as I used to in standard Hotmail.

Anyone else been having similar problems?

The best advice you can get, as long as you use Free Mail accounts, is to move to Gmail (Google Mail). More tha 6 GB of space for free, excellent Spamfilter and more.

Just signup for an new Gmail account, set you Windows Live Mail tp Auto forwarding of all incoming Mails and use the Auto Responder for to inform everybody about the change of you E-Mail Address.

Cheers.

I already have a gmail account, and Hotmail provides me with 5 GB which is far more than I ever need.

Both accounts are set up to use Windows live. I think the problem is in Windows live, as the "add photos" facility seems to be too sophisticated (eg, the recipient can order an instant slide show etc). I suspect that if I sent the photos from my gmail account, using Windows live , I would have the same problem from some of my recipients. I sent my daughter an email with pics attached and she received it on her hotmail account but not on her email account at work. Similarly my friend did not receive it on a bt internet email account.

All very strange - never had the problem when just sending from ordinary Hotmail.

The failure to deliver emails with attachments using Hotmail is a problem that has been noticed by other users before. I agree with Reimar, if you want a free email service go for gmail. You can access it with POP3 mail clients like Outlook and Thunderbird (including secure access), as well as more robust connection methods like IMAP.

I'm convinced.

Outlook Express is now defunct, which is why I switched to Windows Live.

In future I will use gmail and see what happens.

I wrote it in an other thread before: I do NOT understand why you guys using Hotmail or even Live Mail or Yahoo?!

All of this three, special the first two "stealing" data from your computer from the first moment you're connected. Same is with MS Messenger and Yahoo Messenger!

2 years ago, on XP, i checked how many packages was sending to Hotmail without I haven't download anything, just be connected: more than 800,000 within 1 hour! And that on an new virgin installation, only connected to Hotmail. and to Yaho more than 600,000 Packages o the same computer. While to Gmail 76 Packages.

Now could you explain why that difference? And what data was "going" the way to MS and Yahoo?

For me: Never connect to them again.

Cheers.

What's a good alternative for Live Mail to store my emails off line in folders, and to be the hub to receive emails on my various email accounts.

I used to use Outlook Express, but they just closed it down, so I switched to Live Mail.

Any suggestions?

Ok, I've my own in House Mail Server. But the client I use, even if I'm not in my office is The Bat which can do much more than OE or Live Mail.

But I also use Gmail wit 2 accounts and use The Bat as client for to retrieve the mail from Gmail as well.

May you take a look at The Bat.

Cheers.

The setup process is a little bit tedious, but I would recommended Thunderbird Portable Edition and using the configuration advice from here.

I personally like the portable edition because i can keep offline copies of all my emails on a small USB drive and run it from any pc, but if that's not useful to you then you can get the standard version of Thunderbird here.

Why don't you tell us what those extra data packets were Reimer? I am sure a person of your considerable knowledge knows how to set up a sniffer on your own network and analyze what data is being sent and received.

I inquired of you in the "other thread" to provide some sort of proof and you didn't respond. It is time to back up your claims and accusations. C'mon! Give us the facts or stop spreading the FUD.

Had a quick look - looks good. I'll try to install tomorrow.

The Portable Edition will be excellent as I use a desk top in my office and a note book when travelling, and I was having some problems with live mail on my notebook.

Mobi, please look at this post: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/-t196451.htm...t&p=2051760

Nothing has been closed down - I just picked up email from my 25 Hotmail and Gmail accounts using Outlook Express with no problems. Mind you, I hope M$ didn't steal too much info from my computer while I did it! :o

...I switched to Live Mail...

I presume you mean the application "Windows Live Mail" (WLM) which is an M$ program they want people to download and use instead of Outlook Express. It has huge chunks of OE code in it as any user familiar with OE will find out, but its performance is sorely lacking. I've tried it, it's very buggy. The email import from OE is faulty and even after importing some emails disappeared from my WLM folders. I tried Thunderbird and it imported all my OE emails OK, and didn't lose any later.

But I will continue to use OE until M$ finally stop Outlook Express accessing Hotmail accounts. Then I'll switch to T'bird.

I'm afraid I don't know why you couldn't send your large attachment but it is possible - really it is - that it was simply "finger trouble": you thought you'd attached it, but you hadn't. I may run up WLM and try sending a large attachment, but I don't promise to. For me WLM = What a Load of Manure. :D

Posted

Like I said, WLM sucks.

I just sent a 3.5 MB picture from one Hotmail address to another using Windows Live Mail, and I could not pick it up using WLM, but could using Outlook Express.

I even did it twice, in case I didn't wait long enough after sending from one account before trying to receive it on the other. So I waited 15 minutes and WLM displayed the same message as the first time when attempting to receive the email:

Windows Live Mail could not download the requested message. To send and receive messages in your Hotmail account, go to http://hotmail.live.com on the Web, or try again later. To get help from Windows Live Customer Support, go to http://support.live.com and click Windows Live Mail in the list of services.

The email does appear in the recipient's Inbox folder in WLM, but the preview shows this:

Message could not be displayed

Windows Live Mail encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this message. Check your computer for low memory or low disk space and try again.

No such problems with OE - not only did it download both emails from the inbox of the recipient, but it also downloaded both of the sent emails from the sender, and all attachments received perfectly.

JS,

Microsoft sent me a message saying they would discontinue OE at the end of June, which is why I switched to WLM. I assumed it had been switched off but maybe not.

I downloaded WLM onto my desk top and Lap Top.

On my lap top, when travelling, and using a Edge connection, I could not download emails in my hot mail account, but had no problems with my gmail account. As soon as I connected the laptop to my office broadband connection, the hotmail emails downloaded, so it was a band width problem.

There was no"finger " problems with sending the attachments because (i) I cc'd different people and some received and some didn't and (ii) I have copies of the sent messages, and the attachments are there.

As you say WLM sucks - big time - it really is quite incredible how unreliable it is.

I shall try T'bird today.

BTW I didn't try to export the off line folders in OE, as I can still access them, even after they shut it down for live connections, and just started new files from 1st June in WLM

Help Please!!!

OK I've downloaded Thunderbird, and installed my gmail account which works fine.

I have also tried to install my Hotmail account but am stuck on the boxes which ask for incoming server type and incoming server name. I have no idea where to get this info to complete the set up.

Can anyone help me? Where do I get the incoming server name and type for my Hotmail account from?

Thanks :o

Only if you have an paid Hotmail account you can get that data (working)!

The only work around is to forward all mail from Hotmail to an other account and setup an Auto forwarder for get all furture mail forwarded automatically. Also set an Auto Responder for to inform everyone who send mail to the Hotmail account that your Mail account has changed.

Cheers.

You could also use a webmail to POP3 converter like FreePOPS if you also need to send from your hotmail account, but Reimar's suggestion to forward the mail to gmail is much easier if you don't need that.

You didn't read the link I quoted, did you - you naughty boy! :o This one: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Hotmail-Outl...60#entry2051760

You should've received another email from Hotmail stating that they were NOT going to "retire the DAV protocol" - which means you can still use OE to access your Hotmail accounts.

Or maybe a timing problem - timeout settings too short in WLM so it gives up too soon when receiving big emails.

There was no"finger " problems with sending the attachments because (i) I cc'd different people and some received and some didn't and (ii) I have copies of the sent messages, and the attachments are there.

Agreed and I apologise for suggesting such a thing - which is why I did the experiment with the big attachment and found WLM couldn't handle it, but OE could. Isn't it amazing how such a simple test proves there's a problem, and yet no-one at M$ has done it, or admitted there's a problem?

As you say WLM sucks - big time - it really is quite incredible how unreliable it is.

I shall try T'bird today.

T'bird works, and I'll be using it when OE finally dies, or maybe I'll just switch anyway.

How To Add Multiple Hotmail Accounts To T'bird

I assure you, it's a lot quicker to do than to write these instructions! :D

In T'bird, go to Tools/Account Settings...

Click Add Account

Select Web Mail (I think this is where you may have gone wrong)

Click Next

Enter your name and email address in the appropriate fields (I actually paste the email address into both fields, as I've just copied it from Outlook Express)

Click Next

Enter your FULL Hotmail address (you'll need to add "@hotmail.com" to the name already present - a minor bug)

[At some point you may be asked if you want to use a Master Password / Software Security Device. This means you only have to enter one password to allow T'bird to access all your email accounts. I can't remember when this question is first asked, but I was asked at this point, and entered the Master Password.]

Click Next

Click Finish

Back in the Account Settings window, go to the bottom of the left pane (where all your accounts are listed) ans select Outgoing Server (SMTP)

At the top right of this window, click Add

In Description, I entered the email name followed by "SMTP Server", eg. "JSmith SMTP Server"

In Server name, enter localhost

In port, enter 25 (may already be there)

In Use Name and Password, check it (may already be checked)

In User Name, enter email address

In Secure connection, check TLS, if available

Click OK

Back in Account settings, left pane, find the account just added

Click on the account name

Find the drop down arrow to the right of the Outgoing Server (SMTP) box and click it

Find and click on the SMTP Server you just added

Click on Server Settings in the left pane - just under the account name

Under Security Settings, ensure "TLS, if available" is checked (it probably won't be - another bug)

I uncheck everything else under Server Settings

Click OK

Repeat for all Hotmail accounts.

As I said, it's much quicker to do it than to explain it - probably about a minute for each of my 20+ accounts. It certainly helps to copy the email address from OE and paste it where necessary into the fields in T'bird.

Let me know how you get on!

Thank you JS.

Believe it or not, I was struggling with it all afternoon and gave up and went to watch the tennis.

Then I came back, Googled for help, and had just managed to get the Hotmail account up and running (and was congratulating myself), when I received your post.

Anyway thanks fortaking the trouble to answer. I will now play about with it and I'll soon be getting rid of my WLM. :o

OR, you were accessing your Hotmail account/s via Outlook or Outlook Express before M$ introduced the fees for new accounts.

From Mobi's first post I assumed that he was in this category of user since he had already been using WLM to send emails through his Hotmail account.

Perhaps Mobi can clarify if this is the case.

The point is, if he has been accessing his Hotmail account/s for free using OE, he can continue to access the accounts for free using T'bird or WLM.

Correct, it was free before, and still is. :o

How To Add Multiple Hotmail Accounts To T'bird (Updated Procedure)

Download and install (as "add-ons" - extensions - in Thunderbird) "Webmail v. 1.3.2" and "Webmail - Hotmail v. 1.2.15". Get them here: http://webmail.mozdev.org/installation.html

The Webmail extension must be installed first and then Thunderbird restarted. Then install the Webmail-Hotmail extension.

Read more about Webmail here: http://www.reaper-x.com/2006/09/20/accessi...ng-thunderbird/

In T'bird, go to Tools/Account Settings...

Click Add Account

Select Web Mail

Click Next

Enter your name and email address in the appropriate fields (I actually paste the email address into both fields, as I've just copied it from Outlook Express)

At some point you need to set-up the Webmail and Webmail-Hotmail extensions. I cannot recall when I did this, but I presume I did the Webmail-Hotmail one at this point. Both extensions are fairly straightforward so I won't post details unless someone needs them - I also can't remember what I did. :o

Well thunderbird has been working pretty well over the past few months, but now my Hotmail account is giving me grief again.

First of all (and this may not be connected to Thunderbird), I keep getting the same emails delivered over and over again. It is only certain emails, and some of them are quite old, and I keep getting them in my in box as though they are new emails. Very odd.

But the main problems is that all of a sudden Thunderbird cannot download any emails from my Hotmail account. I just get the message:

"Sending the password did not succeed, negative vibes [email protected]"

I have re-entered the correct password dozens of times but to no avail.

If I log in directly to my Hotmail account I have no problems. It just refuses to work through Thunderbird.

I have checked the account settings, and all are OK, and I have not changed anything.

My Google email account works fine.

Any ideas what's going on??

"Sending the password did not succeed, negative vibes [email protected]"

I've just seen this post so I will post what we've already discussed by PM.

I also got the same "Bad vibes" error problem when I ran Thunderbird - which I haven't done for a long time.

The problem is discussed here: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.ph...&start=1095

To fix the problem I did the following:

1. I installed the latest "Webmail for Hotmail" extension (link: http://thunderbird-webmail-extension.googl...pDMGhhhZdjQlNAw ) which is version 1.2.19b49.

2. In Tools / Add-ons / WebMail 1.3.2 / Options / Servers, I changed the ports to 5566 for POP, and to 5577 for SMTP. (I don't know if this is essential, but I did it anyway!). IMAP is not enabled.

3. In Tools / Add-ons / WebMail - HotMail 1.2.19b49 / Options / Mode, I changed it back to "Hotmail Live (New website)". I had played with this setting before I updated the extension, but finally set it back to "Hotmail Live (New website)".

I then sent a message from Outlook Express and collected it OK using Thunderbird, so it looks like the "Bad vibes" error was caused by the very recent changes in the web site that Hotmail have made. The guy who writes the extension has to keep modifying the extension to keep up with these changes.

It looks like his latest version is working OK.

Something else that needs to be done to allow Tbird to access the "new" Hotmail accounts...

1. Access the Hotmail account using a normal browser.

2. If you see the new page "Your inbox has a slightly new look", you must check the box at the bottom that says "Don't show me this again". It is probably this page that is screwing up the Thunderbird extension protocol. Once the box is checked, the page is gone forever, hopefully.

(I did 1. and 2. above as part of my investigation without realising they were critical to getting Tbird working again).

3. Having realised the new Hotmail page is the cause of the trouble, I reset the ports back to 110 and 25 for POP and SMTP. Tbird is still working, so I will leave these settings at their defaults. You must make the POP port setting in "Tools / Add-ons / WebMail 1.3.2 / Options / Servers" the same as the setting in "Tools / Account Settings / <account name> Server Settings": i.e. 110.

It's a zip file (hotmail-1-2-19b49.zip). You need to unzip it (to hotmail-1-2-19b49.xpi) before installing it in Tbird using "Tools / Add-ons / Extensions / Install".
