Looking for something else, I found a site with tips on "How to Speed Up the Performance Vista".

Two items I found intriguing, so I checked them out:

(1) "How to See What Your Boot Up Time is in Vista"

(2) "How to Change the Number of Processors Used at Boot Up in Vista"

The 1st link leads to a copy-and-paste .vbs script which reboots Vista and measures the Vista boot time. It isolates Vista's boot time from the BIOS/POST times. I don't know if the .vbs script would work under XP, but would be interesting to see if it does. (I no longer dual-boot Vista and XP.) This script gives a more accurate assessment of how fast/slow Vista boots. e.g. After the POST, I have to endure a 15-second AHCI boot sequence which makes the whole start-up process seem pretty long. That 15-second addition would, however, be present even booting in XP.

The 2nd link I'm not sure if it really made much difference, but maybe a little? I did three reboots before applying the option to use both of my Core 2 Duo's cores for boot. The results: 82 secs, 96 secs, 86 secs. Then I applied the tweak to specify using both cores, rebooted three times, and the results: 82 secs, 78 secs, 82 secs.
