Now I am back home I would like to donate some books to either schools or orphanages in Thailand. I have many childrens, teenagers and adults books all in English. You can drop them off at any schools or at the central library in BKK - just go in there to the main admin office and drop them off there. As for children and teenager books, they are best used in schools. But as far as adult English books, I think they will be best used in the BKK central library or in any major cities central library around Thailand. I personally wouldn’t want to drop them off at any orphanages cuz they’re not normally dealing with the English language much. I have a friend who works in a school in Bangkok so I am going to try and get in touch with him tomorrow and find out about sending them there. Unfortunately, due to the rising costs of fuel, the USPS stopped the program in late 2007. If you are not from the USA, check with your local postal service and see if they have a program to send "used" clothes and "used" books to other countries. Good luck. You can drop them off at any schools or at the central library in BKK - just go in there to the main admin office and drop them off there. As for children and teenager books, they are best used in schools. But as far as adult English books, I think they will be best used in the BKK central library or in any major cities central library around Thailand. I personally wouldn't want to drop them off at any orphanages cuz they're not normally dealing with the English language much. Mac I am no computer whiz, but here's a little trick, mac. Copy a large chunk of the text whose source you wish to trace and paste it into google. This will take you to the website/s that contain the text. I just did and kinfonet.org/community/ was the result. (Click on "Thailand Library Network" ). For Teacup, you can just right click on the website address at the top of your screen and right click again to paste it here. Then remove the "http://www" at the start of the address so it's not a direct link to the site, which is not permitted on this forum. It is approximately 200 students, at most, none older than 16 years I believe. Very young, but very intelligent students, warm hearted, kind, and caring. . . you can see the school here in the short documentary that I made for the Power of One program. Im sure that Ban Hin Turn would love the books, along with another local school that is a bit larger and definitely better funded called Chaikasem Wittaya. . . They gave us 600 books. (Mostly because they liked the idea of me helping the school and wanted to reward that). I had some succes with other companies too. Give it a try. Say out of every $1000 she spends , half of it goes to post office, the books that do reach los who knows if theyre actually going to be used. Very cost ineffective. And do upcountry kids need english books, they need books to teach them english. Its like usa giving iraq people 1 billion in aid to help the fine people. $500,000,000 goes to government officials, $400,000,000 is lost , the remainder may get to the people or may not. Op should just give money to her contact and let him use the money as he sees fit. $1,000 can be sent very cheaply. Or op should just sponsor her 2 kids and put them thru a good school. Usually I'll accommodate the weight in my bags - one time they gave 20kg. Initially the airline wasn't thrilled to help out, but when shown how many trips were done they came to the party & allowed them free. The books were shared between one of our village schools and one at Nong Ki (not sure of spelling - near Buri Ram) as we have rels at both. I only plan on posting them for the next year as we are moving to Thailand next year and so postage wont be as much of a problem once we are there I'm hoping. lopburi3 Posted July 9, 2008 Share Posted July 9, 2008 Thailand produces very inexpensive text books for school use (one time use) - believe your money would have much more reach and lasting effect if you purchase locally and provide schools for distribution to those in need. Normally children/family have to buy themselves (as uniforms) so any help would be a direct help. Super cheap prices that start at 25 baht for a slim paperback book and go up to 80-100 baht for large hardback childrens books. All books are VERY CLEAN and ALMOST NEW. It was a full 40 foot container of childrends books that was brought in from America. I'm sure it is cheaper to just have their staff select a order for you and then they can ship the books direct to the school designated by you. You just have to provide a grade level and general requirments. I am one of the owners so feel free to contact me about such a arrangement. [email protected]. Anyways, let me know.
