As you maybe aware from other previous Threads... I'm having some problems buring DVDs with my ASUS DRW-1814BLT. I'm also having a bunch of other seemingly O/S related issues.

In an attempt to fix the DVD problem, I installed a firware upgrade I found on the ASUS support page. (Yes, I'm sure that I got the correct file for my Burner.) Anyway, now I am having even more problems... previously, I couldn't burn DVDs, but I still could creat VCDs... Now everytime I put a disk into the drive, the drive disappears from "My Computer", even if I haven't done anything else yet. I can't even Play/Open a disk.

So, of course, I'm wondering if the upgraded firmware had some negative effect, and if I can reverse the upgrade and downgrade back to the original Firmware???

I'm also wondering if I do an O/S repair (WinXP Pro, SP2) will the issue resolve itself?

Decisions are very difficult for the Non-Geek.

Do you recall what version of the firmware you installed? By the by re-setting XP to a restore point will not change the DVD firmware, nor will a repair reinstall of the OS.

I keep a copy of the file in my Software Downloads storage - DRW-1814BLT_FW114_1129

It's the latest version.

Any Ideas?

Is an earlier version available on the ASUS web site? If not, you may find one somewhere else. Often you can install earlier/older versions of firmware (although this is not always possible) to fix problems that may occur with later versions.

Strange it's not on mine I just downloaded it and 'inflated' it with no issues.

I'm going to try and cheat here, this is the inflated file with the extension changed from .exe to .txt Download it, rename it to .exe and that should work. I don't have the specific DVD drive so I can't test further apart from running it and being told {correctly} I have no matched devices.

Thanks... I downloaded and renamed it...

But as I have a PC Doctor coming over tomorrow to deal with all my problems.. or try to anyway... I think it's best to wait until tomorrow, before I try and install it.

Thanks for the help,

Short answer: UTFSE.

Slightly longer answer: Try Googling for a version lower than 1.13.

Ever so-slightly longer answer: A self-proclaimed ''non-geek'' shouldn't even know what ''firmware'' is. Do what you did before but do it with a small number. Try to find version 1.0. It'll probably be there somewhere. Then try to install it. Google ''problems with DRW-1814BLT'' or ''firmware DRW-1814BLT''.

Possible best solution: Power down. Take the cover off your system unit. Unplug the drive. Remove it. Put it in the bin. Buy a new one. If the ''PC Doctor'' does the same, it may be for the best.

I've just realised that's the same drive I've got. Never had a problem with it (except the LightScribe is a bit tempremental, but LS has always been a bit dodgy). It seems to be a pretty good DVD drive. What s/w are you using to burn (or not, in your case) DVDs?

Same drive I have too. (Trouble free since I bought it 18 months ago.) Did you try to "Roll Back Driver" button in device manager?

I have the same model, ASUS DRW-1814BLT, as you.  I just performed a clean install of Vista 64 a couple of weeks ago and upgraded my firmware with the lastest version, the same version above and have had no problems at all with my DRW.  Of course, I wasn't having any problems with it using the previous version firmware either.  It sounds to me that you may have a hardware failure versus a firmware problem.  Is your DRW still under warranty?  If so, I would consider exchanging it.

Please strike the above post from the thread. I did read "firmware" but was thinking "driver." My mistake.
