Whenever I travel, I like to carry a knife for general use. Here is the US, I can carry a gun and a big knife, but in Thailand......I know I'll never be able to carry a gun so I'm looking for alternatives. A small knife would be good. A big knife would be better but I'd hate to draw attention to myself. I also carry a padlock which (in a pinch) can be put in a sock for an alternate weapon (a smelly impact weapon :o )

Why on earth would you want to carry a weapon around? Gun? Knife, padlock in a goddamn sock?

What sort of person are you?

Honestly . . i despair, I really do

I was just trying to wrestle with the mental image of him being held up at knife point hopping around trying to get his shoe and sock off.

Mr Bean springs to mind.

For once I agree, why would you ever justifiably be carrying a knife for the purpose of 'maybe' stabbing someone with it.... are you nuts!! If you have a swiss army knife on your keyring, I don't think we have an issue....

Stay in the US!!

All those ppl that carry weapons it scares me. When they get drunk they might use them or when they get angry. It is better not to carry a weapon, i never have and never will. Im ok though with ppl carryying a pocket knife for doing small things.

I also want to know the law on this:

Whenever I travel, I like to carry a chainsaw for general use. Back in Zimbabwe, I can carry an anti-tank rocket launcher and a vial of biological warfare agent. I also carry a personal atomic weapon which (in a pinch) can be put in a sock for an alternate weapon (a smelly kill-all-including-me weapon )

Jeez - we are talking about BKK, not a warzone.

Just stick to a nice smile, no arrogance and learn some Thai - you'll be safe, I assure you.

Simon

I think the above post says it all, with polite and well-worded sarcasm, very well.

Knives of all kinds are openly sold on the streets and markets of Bangkok and other cities. If you need a knife buy one. Don't flash it around and forget using it as a defensive weapon if you manage to talk yourself into a tight situation with a group of Thais especially if they're drunk. Plan your funeral.

If on the other hand you feel threatened wherever you go, I suggest you take his advice, smi, wai, :D bit of Thai and bpai.

If you want to attract trouble you will. :o

You jest, but stranger things have happened - from the New Zealand Herald, and reprinted in the current issue of Private Eye.

"They found in the overhead compartment a chainsaw in a bag that was leaking petrol into the compartment. His plane was delayed as the owner was identified and the chainsaw removed and put with the main luggage. The owner of the chainsaw said security had stopped him but had let him through because it wasn't one of the things on their list to confiscate."

Full article here, 3rd story down. :o

not sure, but I have 2 massive guns already. A little knife wouldnt even peirce my skin.

Why dont you just carry a baseball bat, you know the ones that are about 10 inches and they can extend.

Anyone asks just say you going to play baseball

hi Don

its me again. I,am your new fan because I like " real men' like you, smart, intelligent, etc which you so obvioulsy are because

of your sensible logical comments.

Some people may think otherwise, lets prove them wrong buddy,so knowing your a balanced, smart guy, a

" real man" you will obviously want to stick to what you say... real men do. You see my friend has a very little knife. He says he can rip skin to shreds with it.

Can we prove him wrong?

He,s sure it will cut even a " real mans" skin.

Silly little men will not stick to what they say.. they will not answer, they will bring up another issues, make threats, anything to back out of their silly, childish, pathetic faux paux they,ve just made to save face, etc, I know you won,t do this.

So, lets set something up. He,ll bring his knife, you just stand there, and you can show him how a " real mans" skin will not cut.Looking forward to hearing from you bud...

How could anyone seriously consider a pocket knife as a weapon.By the time you got it open you would be dead.A folding tactical knife is another story, but illegal.as far as protection I would not recommend a knife in the city.If you used it you would either get shot or sent to bang Khwan forever. If you stay out of certain areas,Thailand is a pretty peaceful place. As far as self defense against the Thais, they are generally pretty little people so they are not a real threat one on one,but this is the problem here s it is never one on one with Thais and farangs. So just smile and mind your business here and no problem.
