I recently brought a new ACER Aspire desktop PC which came with loaded Windows XP,A few weeks later a pop up appeared to check the validity of my Windows XP so i ran it and low and behold it came back as this was a dodgy copy.

I went back to the ACER dealer and explained this with the help of my other half and the man in the shop said that the original is registered to his ACER outlet/shop.

This was in Big C Buriram Acer FRANCHISE.

hOW ARE THEY ALLOWED TO SELL LIKE THIS?

Dodgy dealer.

If you look in the Acer brochure's all aspire desktops come with only Linux installed.

If you want XP installed you need to buy a legal copy yourself.

Easy, original windows OS must come with CD and holographic sticker bearing the serial number has to be stuck on the PC.

Acers here come without and OS.. He did you a favor by loading XP for free.. It isnt bundled in the laptop price.

You really expected him to pay for the OS license from his own pocket ???

OEM copies are legal and don't come with the CD.

But yeah best way to check is to check the official Acer brochure, it will tell you which desktops come with Windows XP - those are the ones that have a legal OEM copy installed. And which ones come without OS or with linux - those are then the ones where the dealer installs a dodgy pirate copy for you.

Did Photoshop come pre-installed too? :o

Yes, that's the kind of favor which may be easily misinterpreted by a foreigner, but it is common in LOS. Poor your other half – they are always on a front line :o

A ‘Copy’ is fine, you just phone Microsoft on there FREE phone and buy the License and Serial No, it is all done on the phone.

You need to have the PC on because they speak good English and will tell you the numbers which you type in, they stay on the phone to make sure your ‘Copy’ has been activated

And you are now legal

Just a thought is there a sticker anywhere on your PC case? you need to activate yourself.. one of my new laptops is a Acer, No disc came with it but there was a MS sticker = just phone MS and give them the numbers on the sticker.

I wouldnt let some small shop load my machine with a god know what OS copy...

Just recently I bought two different types of ACER:

- a desktop Aspire. The dealer asked me what kind of OS I want: Copy Windows or legal one. I said, a legal one. OK, then you need to go and buy it and I will install it, he said. That's what I did and he installed it. BTW the original Windows XP costs THB 5'000 (about 1 year ago)

- one month ago I bought an ACER Laptop (Aspire 6920) and it came with Windows Vista Ultimate pre-installed. (Sticker and everything)

I think I like this policy, because you are free to choose what you want. Windows, Linux, official or copy. I would like to use Linux, but I am still to scared to do so.

When I bought my Acer laptop two weeks ago it came with Linux. The shop asked me whether I want to have an XP installed....nudge-nudge....no extra charge.

Living here for a while I knew what that means so I declined. As for the OP I assume that he thought his XP copy was genuine and included in the laptop price...tough luck...it is not!
